SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

Yeah as far as I can tell lockdown means souvenir shops, nail salons and gyms closed. Not much else seems to have changed. I’m not even sure about nail salons actually.

Yep about twice a week after work - hit Trader Joes, then Vons - sometimes just one. Easy peasey.

According to Spencer Wells the people in Central Asia are still more genetically linked to their ancestors than anyone outside of Africa. Meaning no one ever comes in and pollutes the gene pool.

I’m getting so bummed out.

Also for the tiny breath droplets that asymptomatic people use.

Those are N95 masks. Hospitals may run out of surgical masks temporarily but I don’t think there’s a huge shortage. They just can’t be that hard to make.

N95 mask:

N95 masks are primarily to protect the wearer - especially when in a high-risk environment like around a hospital. They have to be fitted. You can’t have a beard. They can certainly protect others from the wearer as well. If people have them they wear them.

Surgical mask:

Surgical masks are primarily to protect others from the wearer . They don’t have to be perfect but if they knock down 90% of the tiny breath droplets that come out of asymptomatic people, or sputum droplets that come out of symptomatic people - that’s a big win. A surgical mask doesn’t have to be that precise. This is what there are billions of in Asia, not N95.

I work at a university where lots of Asian students wear masks - even before all this happened. Most of them are wearing plain old surgical masks, not N95.

The problem with that is bureaucracy.

Basically hospitals are only getting allocations based on previous usage and not based on increased usage for dealing with corona. This includes surgical masks and gowns. Given more patients and a significantly higher utilization rate, seems like shortages are inevitable.

Holy crap are that guy’s ears yoog. When he’s 80 his head is gonna be 65% ears.

You may know Arnold Snyder as a blackjack guy who wrote a poker tournament book that Mason gave 8/10 to. I am shocked, just shocked, that a guy who runs a website about Vegas strip clubs would be a deplorable.

So I’m trying to figure out how I can get the people in my paper mill (which is apparently essential as we have to replace all those toilet paper tubes, pringles cans and biscuit tubes you animals are using) to use homemade surgical masks. I honestly don’t think there is anything I can do to get through to people. My boss (plant manager) will certainly say it’s the wrong kind of mask and won’t stop inhaling the virus. I don’t think he will be convinced that it’s about stopping the spread from an infected person. I might be able to convince his boss, the regional manager, but he lives elsewhere. And the division leadership uniformly composed of unstoppable morons who are safely ensconced in their home offices making 4-7 times more than I do. I think the only way this can happen is if it is a top down directive from division or corporate leadership but I just don’t think I can make that happen.

Are there any articles in reputable papers that talk about the mask hypothesis in Japan? I’ll send my boss and his boss an email if I can send a link. But I can’t link to a damn twitter thread.

Maybe start by just wearing the mask. When folk inevitably take the piss explain your reasons. Bound to be some like minded folk and as this gets worse more people will hopefully cotton on. Do it from the bottom up as well as trying from the top down.

There’s an article that I can’t find right now where the Chinese expert is chastising Italy for not having everyone wear masks.

Kelly Loeffler seems just as surprised as us to learn she bought $10M worth of ExtenZe.

My best friend actually works there. He’s tried to get me to come work there working on drones. Can’t bring myself to do it though, whole bombing children thing would give me nightmares. Although lately they’ve mostly been protecting Saudia Arabia’s shipping from Iran and not bombing.

Anyways he says its an incredible company to work for. Though he works over seas now and says the bureaucracy is getting much worse.
