SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

I’m so brainwashed I see a graph where USA isn’t #1 and immediately think of ways we can get to #1

I previously posted bragging about how cool my job was being about shutting down and not having people work but today I was:

  1. Texted by a third party telling me my boss says to come in on Monday
  2. About an hour later emailed by HR confirming we were closed and were supposed to shelter in place but if we wanted to voluntarily come in and work we’d get some kind of extra pay since the company is paying everyone their usual income anyway
  3. Called by HR telling me the same basics as the email and reiterating that it was voluntary and if I found it “creepy” they weren’t forcing anybody to come in.

They’re trying to say we’re an essential business but one of our main customers closed because of sheltering in place so it seems like a tough sell to me.

Is there any benefit to being on site? What’s the reason for even offering for you to voluntarily come in?

Since the (so far unsubstantiated) thing about Kushner’s brother involved with a covid testing company and now the insider trading stuff, I’ve been shocked to find so little reference to war profiteers being shot or even jailed from past conflicts.

If you go by exponents, USA#1 (though likely due to testing bias of artificially low numbers to start).

Yeah, hospital construction seems important.

At this point they might want to jump straight to building morgues.

Management probably views this as an opportunity to get ahead of schedule to please customers, these dopes seem to think everything’s going to just pop back to normal in two weeks.

Profiting has always been a feature not a bug of war.

This week we were at half staff and limited hours, but hardly any work to do. After the LA / California announcements last night we had nobody come in today. Starting next week everybody is work from home except the guy who processes checks and myself or one of my partners. Our clients’ checks get sent to us, we record all the info/make sure they’re being paid correctly/etc, take our commission, and send the remainder on to them. They need that money, so it’s a pretty essential service imo. We think we can get it done in two days per week, so on Tuesdays and Thursdays a few of us will go into the office to do it.

Given the amount of time it’s safe to assume production is going to be halted we’re in a lot of trouble. Lots of tough decisions in the coming weeks. Nothing I can do about it, and many many many people are in the same boat. But I’m pretty sad about it right now.

LFS,

That just plain sucks. Will be thinking of you.

Thanks. It’s less about the money, more about the blood sweat and tears. But it’s not over yet and I’ve got a shitload to be grateful for. Many people have much bigger problems.

I heard someone on Pence’s staff has tested positive.

If zombie and apocalyptic movies have taught me anything, the character who betrays us all through selfishness and incompetence always fucking dies eventually.

Normally in painful and graphic ways.

Just went out to the local bakery to buy bread and coffee beans.

Closed eat in. Take out only. (Seems good)

Long queue. But people well spaced out (also good)

Little window with glass panes between the servers and the customers (great)

But the servers can’t hear the customers, so both sides are ducking under the glass and talking about 1 foot from each other’s face…

Okay. Last trip to the bakery for me.

Beat: I’m back at work because I’m essential and I’ve discovered it’s basically impossible to do my job from home. Brag: They’re giving everyone who has to come in comp time for coming in which turns into effectively double overtime, even people who are exempt and not eligible for overtime or comp time normally, which is me. Variance: Probably going to die.
