Have begun to think a poster above is correct, and my fitness level at 175 may not be as good as I think. … that’s not an exact quote, but the basic idea. … I spent a decade early in my life focused on a sport, working out twice a day during some periods. It never occured to me to ask if I was “in shape” or “overweight” or anything because I was always using my body. Now my body is some kind of weird accessory to carry around and put clothes on, since most of my work and life are fairly sedentary. I really have no idea anymore what it is capable of.

Hey!

It was my experience that as I lost more weight I was still only approaching where I wanted to be. The ideal is really hard and I probably couldn’t sustain it. Still feel good about my effort and what success I’ve had.

You can find sites that tell you what your ideal weight “should be”. Not recommending one but I do think your goals will evolve as your perspective changes.

I’ve been eating for three days. … this is the first time since the beginning of March where I feel my body and wish maybe I’d gone a little easier on the food and wine. … I almost skipped the scale this morning, the emotional equivalent of nuking a PT database after a massive tilt … “that’s not really me anyway” … the thing is, it isn’t you. and the best we can do is make the best decisions we can, over and over. but some lessons take a while to learn. … scale this moring, 188.8 … huh?

Could be dehydration. There was a lot of wine spread out across the weekend. But the app/scale reads my hydration as still rising, so who knows. The thing is, “overeating” now includes a ton of veggies, mostly. Made a black lentil and mushroom ragut, with roast veggies. … also a lot of bread and olive oil.

Planning to fast today. Would not be surprised to only consume liquids and gain weight tomorrow.

After a day of fasting, scale says 188.4 this morning. … I drank decaf green tea most of the day and yet still think I am dehydrated this morning. Probably a reminder of how much water we get through the solid food we eat. … walked 3.5 miles yesterday, a new route with some nice lake views and an alpaca farm. getting the first vax shot today.

accidentally left a pot of plain black lentils on the stove for 36 hours. then moved to the fridge. still eat?

First vaccine shot yesterday. Facility was way under-used. There were chairs for probably 5x the number of people being vaccinated while I was there. Nurse said many people “reluctant.” …

Mango smoothie yesterday. And some bread I made, heavy on the rolled oats and whole wheat because I ran out of AP. So. Not bad actually, but not what I’d wanted. … Later on I made some polenta. I’ve had this idea for a breakfast dish, roast veggies on polenta with a fried egg.

187.6 this morning … walked by a mirror at the vax site yesterday and caught site of my body. Definitely pudgy. … Think my feeling of “super fit” at 175 may have been a very relative thing.

Oh yeah, I ate some thc-infused baked goods someone gave me. Teeth-shattering sugary. Wtf is wrong with people? … otoh, I notice my salt tolerance is WAY down in recent weeks. Recipes I was making with X salt, I now make with X/2. … also noticing a chalky mouthfeel to some flavor profiles.

Just devoured this. … pretty much everything was farmed in this community.

Ok, not the hot sauce.

This is good stuff. Polenta is an underutilized breakfast food for people that want to lose weight, its super filing and satisfying.

Frustrated this morning, not gonna lie. Had the excited thought, “how long before I’m below 180?” … Scale: 189.0

Ate light, walked 3.5 miles, biked an easy 6 back and forth to get the mail. Lots of veggies. +1.4? … I’m assuming … I dunno. Feels like a long time for the weekend dehydration wearing off. It’s good though. Weight loss is never a straight line down, of course. Seeing it go up when I feel good about my routine is healthy, I suspect.

Yesterday I got my kayak out of storage. Ate some bread, lots of veggies, a couple glasses of wine, and a cupcake.

188.8

Feels like my body is screaming “We better hold on to all this, it’s been pretty slim pickings lately.”

Decided not to eat the 36-hour lentils.

188.8 … body definitely shifting, doesn’t want to give it up. I can see physical changes though. … Been at this roughly 40 days, down about 18 pounds so far. Lost 16 pounds in the first 30 days, so basically 2 pounds in the last week and a half. So, we’re down to more or less standard weight loss patterns and rates?

Things to consider …

  • Shift the ratio of foods on my plate. Carbs added to veggies and protein, not the other way around. Basically, it’s not a pile of polenta with some veggies. It’s veggies, with some polenta!
  • Actual exercise instead of simply being more active?
  • Cut down on bread?

I don’t really have a goal wieght, but evaluating around the 180 or 175 mark feels right. … Want to get a sense for the point at which a sustainable lifestyle intersects with a comfortable weight.

185.8 this morning. I’m thinking about not looking at the scale for a week, to see how that feels. … sadly, the weather will be gray and rainy this week, so staying active will be more of a challenge.

Strange dip after plateau … dehydration. I drank too much yesterday. First time since March 1 I’ve done that. Not anything crazy, and it was intentional … I hung out and worked on some stuff, read, watched random videos, chatted with friends … but it was still an unhealthy amount of alcohol.

Happy with my results so far. Six weeks, down about 20 pounds. Regardless of the accuracy and the daily ups and downs, that’s a fair bit of weight to not be dragging around.

Couple of random thoughts …

My shits have changed in the last few days. Very strange.

This scale … I trust it in terms of weight, generally, but have suspected that it was simply adjusting my body fat and hydration figures as a ratio. Last week I noticed my weight tick up one day, while body fat went down. So, the scale is at least trying to measure something independently. Total body fat has dropped from 26.7% to 22.1% in the six weeks … Starting @ 207, I’ve gone from 55.3 pounds of fat on me to 41 … So I’ve dropped 14 pounds of fat. Maybe. Ish.

Couple of days without stepping on a scale. Interesting … I can sense tension around those morning weigh-ins because I want each to be a new low, which of course is not possible. … the tension does help keep my eating stable, maybe. … but opting to go a week without the scale, I can also feel this sense of relief and ease, and a pretty secure knowledge that it will all even out in a week if I eat well …

tl;dr 1st graf: perhaps I’m moving into a period where the scale isn’t necessary. still, I have no plans to stop using it in the near term. I’ve been cranking the oven up pretty high lately and liking my bread results, so maybe better keep the scale

Four days, no scale. WHAT DO I WEIGH? Dunno. Do I care? Dunno, either. These jeans fit, though, and I’ve got at least one pair of swimming trunks. … who knows, maybe I gain weight this week.

I bought a food processor. Used it last night to make a curry. Ran some kale through the shredder and mixed that in … I’ve worked in restaurant kitchens and so I know what good equipment feels like. This thing works, but it is a cheap POS. Not much joy in it. Anyway, the curry was ok. … even though I blasted through the onion, carrots, sweet potato and kale with the food processor, I still had the sense that is was more work than just using my knife.

Plotting a bathroom renovation. And a quiche.
Rain and chilly this week, tough to get outside.

This has been my general experience with even good food processors and veggies. And chopping veggies with a sharp knife isn’t even a chore IMO, its kind of fun.

Completely agree with this, at least at the home kitchen level. Which basically explains why I keep trying to get into professional cooking, only to again take refuge in my own kitchen. … Commercial cooking is only tangentially the same thing as the cooking most of us do at home. … I prefer chopping my own veggies, but give me 50 pounds and I’m gonna push em through that robot coup every time. … And, btw, “robot coup” is apparently the actual spelling and that’s weird.

Lately I’ve struggled to keep my knives sharp, though. My stone is all is clogged up.

I’ve taken to having pbs cooking shows on in the background in the middle of the night. That Jacques Pepin dude’s scary fast with a knife.

Hone often sharpen occasionally?

I love Pepin for his attitude and general vibe. Seems like a good dude.

I have a sense of curiosity, about getting on the scale tomorrow. … I ate moderately, or sparsely, most of the week. Then my girlfriend and I did some cooking–she made granola. I made a fritatta with roast carrots and mushrooms. We ate a lot of bread, some wine. … the next day, some granola, some eggs, finish the wine … rained two days, didn’t get outside.

So, today is Sunday. Fasting today. Walked this morning, and it was beautiful.
Last Monday I weighed 185.8 … o/u … ?

Maybe … o/u 182.3 ?

184 this morning. Somehow I am disappointed, while also thinking that’s perfectly reasonable.

Looking at the Monday weigh-ins …

4/19 - 184.0 (-1%)
4/12 - 185.8 (-1.6%)
4/05 - 188.8 (-1.7%)
4/29 - 192.0 (-1.9%)
4/22 - 195.6 (-4.1%)
4/15 - 203.8 (+1%)
3/08 - 202.2 (-2.3%, week to week)
3/01 - 207.0 (start)

So, there’s a large initial jumping around and weight loss as my body gets rid of some excess water and waste, but in the last month I’m losing modest but declining amounts each week.
