Oh and this stuff is super common. I’ve never seen an active case, but it’s pretty common in my area to see this who is older and grew up in Mexico. It usually never gave a symptom.
That’s the thing about brain disorders. There can be “symptoms” that do not stand out from the normal range of people. Like, you or I could remember 15% less stuff or think 15% more slowly and it wouldn’t be recognizably symptomatic.
There are some people missing a good deal of their brain that are sometimes described as “normal”, but that’s only because “normal” is very broad and may simply mean: can read, converse, put on clothes, shop, maintain hygiene, etc., but if it were a high-functioning person, their function would be significantly degraded vs their baseline.
One of the things Dan Dennett (RIP) emphasized is humans will treat just about any system, especially other humans, as “normal” if they have even minimal performance. That’s partly how you get someone like Trump, who is borderline insane for anyone paying close attention, elected as president.
