RFC: Proposed New Subforum

If you’re seriously asking, we have to start here:

And not because I’m doing a Answer-My-Question-First childish gambit, but because it’s the only way it’ll make sense.

It’s not just the policy of escalated bannings, you also made it quite clear that it was who was getting banned.

OK?

I don’t understand. I’m not saying that the people that want a new forum are those things. I’m saying that the same people who call each other those names will almost certainly do it over there too, and I’m curious what will be different.

It is an issue JT. It’s not the only issue.

The overarching issue is that I don’t think a clique of toxic dishonest posters should have a little haven, as their history has shown they’re toxic. If we’re going to give y’all this little space, we should be honest about what it is, because it’s not because there’s theoretical differences in moderation styles.

I’ll stop in this thread for now.

Thanks. I think this type of info will help set expectations about what the new subforum could be like and how much scope there is for it to have different policies than the rest of the forum.

More broadly, I would liken the proposed new subforum to a type of “home rule” where participants could set their own standards. For this to work, the subforum would need to have its own set of moderators who agree not to moderate behavior outside of the subforum, and moderators of the rest of the forum would have to agree not to moderate behavior in the subforum. This is essentially how it worked at 2p2: moderators of any forum had the tools to ban users for any reason, but it was a no-no for a moderator to ban users for things they did outside of that moderator’s forums (with the exception of certain things like spam cleanup).

I think we would also need to give some thought to how the subforum could be unwound if needed (if not through the RFC process that has already been established) as well as whether and how the main forum could impose rules that would apply to the subforum.

rule for new forum, no more edits

i know it seems quaint compared to the big issues but somebody makes a post, you reply, then they edit and add The Meat, and you almost miss it

Sorry, I missed your edit.

Are you asking what will happen if Jman and Ikes et al come over and start raising hell?

I think at this point we’re hoping they don’t through sheer power of inertia. That’s the part that nobody wants to spell out.

Trying to dishonestly summarize my post is not going to garner a serious reply, nor is it a path forward.

Maybe a few weeks ago I would have thought there was a chance that this might be true, and responded sincerely. Now? No, not going to happen. Bye JT.

Yah sorry I’m a serial “editor”.

That’s exactly my question - when there is a Forum 2 version of the COVID thread that Churchill posts in and Caffeine comes in and refutes something and boom it’s on fuck you troll eat shit doctor ikes like will invariably happen. Is it an anything goes free-for-all with no moderation? Moderation goes up for a forum wide vote? A sub-forum wide vote where certain folks get votes?

I feel like understanding what will be different between those threads and these threads would help inform my vote.

They openly talk about it in the thread. I have to go by memory, while The Captains still have access to the full thread apparently. It doesn’t go well for me and Trolly though.

If you are not here to discuss the thread topic, please don’t post in the thread.

I’m fine with starting a new subforum but it’s weird to me that we didn’t have more of a discussion about just slowing down bans first. The bans only ramped up recently because people requested them in response to increasing vitriol. If that was a failed experiment then it feels like there a lot of ways to have approached that, but maybe I missed something.

Whatever though. I’m gonna take a couple days off. No hard feelings, and I hope the best for all of you.

Dismissing someone who is being blatantly dishonest about my position in this thread is on topic.

Very true, including one poster who ragequit over that word being banned who has now returned, just in time to participate in this.

It’s a tough spot. You feel like you are entitled to post angrily because you are a doctor and the Captains are posting medical non-sense. Wookie, being a scientist himself, feels your frustration.

I don’t think we should become a post-truth forum but giving the Captains a little space that no one else has to read to JAQoff in seems reasonable to me.

so much intrigue I damn near shat myself

Why are you replying to me here?

I assume this is also a proposal for the sub-forum name?
