I’m sure they could. I mean I remember proposing a rule something like attack the argument not the poster rule when we first moved and everyone was all nah we like attacking the poster when the poster is a dumb shithead. Well, OK. But you’re not going to have a friendly forum, or rather, there is only going to be friendly relations among ideological factions. Which is largely what we see here.
So then Captains: Unmoored would be a way to self-select for people who aren’t first valuing ideological loyalty above all, but are placing respect and discourse as the higher virtue.
I mean, I very honestly do to, but just sort of wishing it to be so doesn’t make it so. You personally are talking a decent game, but you’re also allied in this effort with people who are not. If your goal is more to just achieve a divorce between feuding factions, well, maybe, but that’s also not what you’ve been proposing.
And lest we rewrite history, the early days of this forum involved some very, very, vertical modding decisions, like the immediate and permanent bans of Inso and Kelhus and I think 1-2 others that, sure, were widely popular but also not subject to any sort of community referendum or attempts at mere “knock it off” statements to make them happen, and I think they were important to keeping this place humming. It’s revisionist to claim that the early days of this forum were more community-oriented when the real key difference was less outright feuding between prominent members.
I actually disagree that most people are in ideological factions here. Maybe after this it’s more that way but outside of the 10% on the extremes on either side the actual majority doesn’t care or enjoy these petty squabbles. They dont hate each other based on where on the political spectrum either.
That’s my entire problem with this whole thing. Tearing the forum apart to appease either of the 10% groups is bad. Maybe that’s not what the end result is here. But it sure seems like it from my seat as someone who has mostly not done serious battle in the mod threads in a long long time.
I think posters that come to the sub to shit on other posters from the others subs will get exiled pretty quick, so you hopefully don’t have to worry about that. (If not, this isn’t going to work.)
I am worried this subforum is going to split the forum in two. But it also seems like not opening this subforum is going to split the forum in two even more.
These fights really have barely stemmed from political posts. If you look at the forum in general, political posting is way down while this animosity has increased.
Serious question, what ideology do you have? I honestly have no idea. This isn’t an ideological question at all. My objections towards you, and anyone else I can think of, are nearly purely behavioral. For the life of me, I can’t really think of an ideological position you’ve really taken.
Mods have a few crude tools. Essentially all have been tried, including “just talk to them and ask them to stop,” and none of them work all the time. Sometimes, none have worked at all. Just going in with a plan wishing for unicorns and rainbows doesn’t really seem like a plan, but if you have some new ideas, I’m certainly open. Right now it seems like a divorce and hoping for the best is more the actual plan than any actual forum regulation plan.
What do you mean by “modding applied evenly?” For the most part, the same people who got in trouble at 2p2 have got in trouble here. The 90% of people who never got anything haven’t gotten touched. I understand that’s a lot of your contention, but the fact this is a ~15 year problem for some people says a lot imo.
