Reveal Thread: Walrus Grab Bag 2 - The Walrus Strikes Back

I usually go Shot Chaser. Post the song and hit play to listen one last time. Then play a song of my own choosing before posting the next. Normally ~10 minutes between songs.

For me I think anything between 5-10 mins between works. Generally enough to give 1 listen of the previous track is good imo.

Enjoying the reveal!

Random comment: Finding a cover by an opposite-gender artist was deceptively difficult. It felt like 90%+ covers were ineligible for the category.

I just tried to think of covers by women and most of them ended being eligible.

+1 to this. At first I thought it would be quite quick and easy, then as I started to look around I realised nothing I already had in my playlists was a fit so had to dig a bit more.

*Edit to add - covers are always a fun reveal for me though, I always find something new and interesting.

That made me play the original. Love a bit of MBV

In 8th place, with 6 points:

Lana del Rey - Season of the Witch, originally by Donovan

I first became aware of Lana del Rey when she had a turn as a musical guest on SNL which was so bizarre that it seemed like a skit, leading to Kristen Wiig lampooning her on the next episode by claiming to be “stiff, distant, and weird”.

Recorded for the movie Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, del Rey’s song is a spookier version where one can imagine her being the witch and casting her spell on the listener. Contrast that with the psychedelic original, which picks up energy as the song progresses and sounds like a warning to the listener.

Although it doesn’t qualify for this category, some people might want to check out the almost-ten-minute-long cover from the album Super Session by Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, and Steven Stills. However, del Ray’s version is more interesting than the Joan Jett cover that would have qualified for this category.

I picked the artist, then looked for a song that applied.

As a matter of fact, I do that for a lot of submissions, not just covers. Maybe that’s why I suck at walrus.

Starting to think my other choice wouldn’t have done much better. Also Princess Bride stream isn’t for another hour and a half so I’ve once again played myself

I fell in love with Lana del Ray’s Born to Die from listening to it on youtube. I didn’t realize until about the tenth listen that it was one of those channels that speed up the track by like 15-20% to avoid copyright take downs. Lol, I just couldn’t get into her sluggish molasses delivery after that.

My first impression of her was…not good, as I noted, but she’s been growing on me. Have you seen her SNL appearance?

Yes, it was a disaster and she looked bad etc.

That was a long time ago, she’s proved herself alot since then.

This is a great category and I know what I would have submitted but will wait until the end to post.

Listening to Lana and this back to back and I couldn‘t even tell that this the same song if I didn‘t hear the words „season of the witch“.
