Looks like I get the “just off the podium” podium spot.

Yeah, I like it too. I like the top 5 a lot.

Seconded, really good.

(Reminds me a bit of the first Belly album.)

Podium time! Like I said, one clear winner from the jump, but I had spots 2-5 all over the place but decided to just make it official.

Heart of Amsterdam (Storm Version) – The Gentle Storm

I was really confused by this at first. Celtic rock? No? Symphonic metal? Kinda? I had a hard time fitting this into a genre box, so I finally said “fuck it” because it ultimately doesn’t matter, and it ended up on the podium. This song, and the next two, were exactly what I was looking for when I suggested this category. Listen to her…she loves her city and the song is actually about her city and paints a picture of Amsterdam that makes me want to go right now. I don’t know this group, but reading the youtube comments gives me the impression that it’s actually some kind of supergroup made up of a bunch of folks from other acts? Whatever, I like it.

Trimdon Grange Explosion - The Unthanks

Context for the song - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimdon_Grange 1 - there’s quite a few great versions of it.

I love when bands take traditional music and make it sound modern without taking away from the tradition. That’s what this does. I’ll admit I had never heard this song (any version), though I did vaguely recall learning about the incident or reading about it at some point. After listening to a few other versions, I still like this one the best. I think it manages to capture through sound exactly what the lyrics are talking about: the sadness of the tragedy itself, the strength of those left behind, and the weight of the memory of innocent victims. Her voice is the perfect counterpoint to the subject matter, too.

Now I have to frantically look if I didn’t miss my song in the previous spots. If not, I won the take Skydiver8 somewhere category.

Alternative Ulster – Stiff Little Fingers

Welcome to Belfast at times of ‘The Troubles’. One of the best political punk-rock anthem of its era.

Someone (Yuv) has my tastes pegged perfectly. I know I left it wide open in the category description, but I certainly didn’t expect to get the “maudlin sounds of the university station.” This was the hands down winner from the very first listen. Nothing else could catch up. I love the genre, of course, but the guitar hook is great and the whole thing is a perfect example of what punk was originally about. Imagine me jumping around my room screaming the chorus because that’s pretty much exactly what happens when I listen to this song. Play this at open mic night and the manager would kick you out after staring in horror as the patrons jump on the tables and throw a couple chairs. Maybe start a fight. Fuck yeah.

Guess I can’t argue with that, it’s a great song. Now definitely to bed, future pyat will be quite upset with me but thanks for the reveal nonetheless.

Thanks for the great reveal sky! I am definitely going to listen to the higher ranked entries for some ideas on what to submit to you in future.

Also congrats to Yuv who is on quite the tear in this Walrus.

sorry to cram it in, but we are getting major work done on the house and the contractor wants to start Monday, instead of in a couple of weeks, so I have a ton of prep to do.

Figured I should get this done ASAP.

heh, my top 5 here are quite possibly the 5 most dissimilar songs on the planet, so good luck!

This is mine. As you might remember I had a similar idea for my category. I wanted songs about places, travelling, vacations etc. and this was one of the songs I had in mind. I was too slow and you had already posted your category.
I had a really hard time finding any other songs that fit the category. Freddy Mercury’s Barcelona? Too well known. Winds of Change? Naaah.
Lacking serious alternatives I sent you this hoping you might like it.

By the way, the song is from a concept album about a Dutch 17th century couple. They recorded two versions: The storm version (metal) and the gentle version (~pop).

Oh that’s right.

I posted mine right after I heard this on the playlist I was streaming

If I had to submit to me for this category, I would have chosen either that or this (calling @seities) :

sheena is a punk rocker!
