Reveal Thread: Walrus Grab Bag 2 - The Walrus Strikes Back

I’ve legit watched this 10 times now.

Partly because it’s adorable and makes me happy, and partly to try and learn his moves since they are vastly superior to my own.

Lakes of Canada – The Innocence Mission

It should tell you something that I kept getting this one mixed up with the Dar Williams track in my head and had to listen to them several times to make sure I had it right. This one is higher because it’s slightly more interesting musically (like, they use a couple more chords than Dar does?) and I like the tune better. Sure, it makes Lake Louise or wherever sound nice, but I go to places to experience them, not sleep through them. Otherwise, meh. One grande pumpkin spice latte for “Innocence”!

This was me. I did the same as @mjiggy and just went with “Ok, checks off a location”. Sorry.

wow…not what I put you on.

I love SOAD and this album but I wouldn’t have done the cover of it so not me.

Campfire Kansas – The Get Up Kids

Memories of camping trips and summer…in Kansas, I guess? Whatever. They dragged a keyboard on stage for this one, which makes it more interesting, but the vocals are kind of generic (see next entry) and we’re back to replacement-level guitar strumming, so this might be a good time to check out the community notice board in case you’re looking to buy a used couch or want to find a protest to attend on Saturday. One grande skinny mocha with a whisper of nutmeg for “Kid”!

were we suppose to send you to a happy location? This does not bode well for me then.

not necessarily. It can be not boring without being happy.

I think I know what skydiver’s problem is, and I think I agree completely, but then I also worry my track will drop any second.

(Still awake, shouldn’t be)

Old Pine – Ben Howard

Someone who does more than strum the guitar! I’m intrigued enough to go back to my table! Oh. Memories of camping trips and summer…by an old pine, I guess? The guitar is the best part of this song. I’m not sure why so many of the male singers in this genre want to sound like each other, and they all sound like the radio hits I occasionally hear. Who is that? The Lumineers? Mumford and Sons? Someone tell me because I don’t know. One grande soy mocha with a hint of caramel for “Ben”!

This was me, one off the nodium

Godsmack is in that same genre as SOAD so not surprised you rate them similarly

One Great City! - The Weakerthans

It’s secretly a love song.

This is a good way to cap off open mic night, with a song that made me chuckle (mostly in surprise when I heard “I hate Winnipeg” for the first time). Finally a song that makes me feel something other than ennui. I totally understand this love/hate relationship with a place. It’s how I feel about Cincinnati, for sure. Musically-speaking, however, it’s still the genre that is just meh to me. Still enough to finish in the top half, though. One tall caramel macchiato, no whip, with a dash of cinnamon for “WK”!

Ah! There’s ol Benny Boy!

Mine, and I will take 7!

Note to self - steer well clear of this genre next time Sky does a category :-)

Now we’re getting somewhere. In all honesty, places 2-5 swapped around a lot during my listens, and any could have ended up anywhere depending on my mood. There was, and has always been, one clear winner. These mostly ended up here because they were different and interesting.

Letter From Home – Pat Metheny Group

I like this. I don’t think a song needs words to invoke a place, and this wraps me up in a comfy blanket of sound and feels like, well, home. I freely admit that this could be considered tenuous on the “category fit” scale, but because it did make me feel like home, I allowed it…and it moved up to here because this is what I put on after I’m home from the coffee house and getting ready to sleep or study.

Río Paraná – Suarez

I took the “I like to get real while traveling” quite literally. Here is a simple but beautiful song that isn’t touristy at all, just a song about rowing upstream on a local river and seeing changes.

I enjoy when the sound of an organ adds to a song, as opposed to being completely distracting, and this is a great example. The bridge/instrumental part is great too, but what I really enjoy the most is the vocals. Also, you’re lucky I understand enough Spanish to understand the song, but even if I didn’t, this would still place high, as South America is one of my dream travel destinations. Nice track, and I am going to listen to more of their stuff.
