I’m just messing around. I could have found something for sure. It’s just something I listen to a lot less.

Pyat DM’d me at the time and mentioned he had another category thought up already and he was happy to go with that if it made things easier, which is how things ended up as they did.

Mjiggy with the rare slip leaves Pauwl and Yuv vying to take over the lead.

I would have submitted a rock song thinking it was jazz so probably the same result for me

@pyatnitski not that you need any approval, but jokes aside if your kid is not feeling well lets continue tomorrow. I have a coughing child at home and i wouldn’t want to do a reveal right now.

He’s back asleep, I don’t think it’s anything other than gluttony and this is 90% copy & paste now.

Godsmack - Voodoo
(Drums: +)

We’re at the point in the reveal where I find it hard to say much about the song as it’s fine but with nothing that particularly grabbed me. I guess the thing to say here is that it’s a song I normally wouldn’t give a second thought to except that I enjoyed the drums on it. It’s mostly a nice groove on the toms and bass that locks in with the bass line and just anchors things really nicely throughout. I even looked up the drum tab and gave it an amateurish attempt.

The song itself seemed a 90s grunge sort of thing and I was mildly surprised it was from as late as '98. Wikipedia claims they are alt or nu metal though, so I guess I’m not hearing the subtleties. But, who cares, I’m sure there’s people knocking out this sort of thing right now (Godsmack themselves are still about) and if that’s your bag then that’s your bag. Sadly it just isn’t really my bag.

(PS The video is enjoyably bonkers black magic nonsense, worth a look.)

For one sweet moment I had pyat figured out and from there on it’s been nothing but disaster for me. In this very walrus I got a last place from him and in another category he almost submitted the exact same song as me, then audibled to something that got first place and beat me.

Explains a lot.

I dig this track and I am sure Mjiggy will too, being the huge fan of the band that he is ;-)

Still alive!

Soul II Soul - Back To Life
(Drums: +)

As has become traditional in my walrus adventures this was the song that caused much deep soul searching to go on. The submitter claims:

this is a perfect song and the drum loop makes it

And I’m almost inclined to agree with them. The second part is true, it’s a lovely bit of work. I’ve no idea how much they did to the original loop to make it fit so well, but whatevs, the act of musical genius is knowing what to do and executing. So why is it in 9th place?

Well, part of that is that it’s the only song here that I’ve heard a million times before. It’s probably not an admirable character trait but familiarity definitely breeds contempt with me in most music. But my reaction when this played was much stronger than that. I suspect it’s some link to whatever was happening when this came out or whenever I heard it a lot, but, I dunno, I felt a wave of ennui wash over me and I just wanted the song done.

It isn’t really the song, I don’t think, which definitely is superbly put together throughout. When I made myself listen I could hear that but I really didn’t want to listen most times and, well, them’s the breaks.

(If I find a therapist and make a breakthrough then I’ll maybe come back and revise this ranking. Bear with me.)

It seems I approached this category differently than everyone else. I’m still alive, though, so it’s working out so far!

It guess it makes sense to submit Bangers to the drums category.

Interesting submissions so far (if we switch the covers with the originals)

And now I breathe a sigh of mild relief as we begin songs that I can honestly say I enjoyed.

XTC - Helicopter
(Drums: 0)

There’s lots of bands from around this time I’ve never actually listened to and XTC are one of those. There’s lots to like—the spiky guitars that nonetheless really want to be in a pop song, the affected vocal style, downtuned bass noodling about—it’s just quality. It reminded me a little of Wire, one of my favourites from post-punk (that I actually have listened to). Talking Heads too.

The drums, though. Well, nothing bad to say, the beat is basically disco, wacking the semi-open hi-hat on the ands, and feels like it fits the song well. I can’t say it stood out to me massively, but why would it need to on a song that is overall so enjoyable. Maybe I’m damning with faint praise, it’s well played and crisp and he nails the few fills he does. Anyway, will definitely be giving some more XTC a listen, (if I remember.)

I accidentally kicked a ball walking around near my son so I had to spend the last 20 minutes playing a game with arbitrary rules he kept changing and whatever I did i got yelled at. So you know, exactly the same as this.

Still alive tho.

XTC is great. Definitely a unique sound for the time.

Still not mine.
