Borrowing, sir. Just borrowing, forever.
Since this RFC has been open for over three days, I would like to use this RFC to put forward the following wording of a rule proposal to codify guidelines for mods, as this was another example where some of these issues came up. This vote requires 50% approval in order to pass on to an official rules vote that would require 60% to pass. Voting yes here doesn’t guarantee passage of the rule, but just allows it to move forward to a formal vote.
My proposed wording is as follows:
- Mods need to talk to problem posters before banning. Most posters here are reasonable and will tone things down when requested. Bans should only be issued after requests are ignored.
- Mods must be willing to discuss decisions. As a community run board, mods should be responsive to the community and be willing to engage regarding their decisions (and modify their actions based on community input).
- Silence - not ban. When issuing a “ban”, the silence feature should be used. Ban should only be used for community approved permanent bans or where a community member is found to be abusive via DM while silenced.
- Mods cannot act on a post involving themselves or where it is in response to their involvement in a discussion. Another moderator must act if the post is actionable. Where this is impossible, the mod team as a whole may vote on the correct course of action. An exception can be made in a situation where a poster is doxxing or directly threatening a mod, or other unforeseen extreme situations. In these cases, the rest of the mod team should be alerted to confirm the decision.
- Failure to follow these guidelines would be viewed as reason to remove a mod within the existing RFC process.
ETA: removing admin tag. Let’s discuss for three days and then vote.
did you post this in the wrong thread?
Nope, this RFC has been open for three days and the mod guidelines can apply to either RFC, so I’m posting in the correct RFC to move this forward.
Sure seems like you’re using another RFC to bypass all discussion. That’s not how this works.
No one is stopping you from discussing it
I’m following the rules of the forum.
Bullshit.
How would you envision 1 and 2 as different from how moderation works today?
Whats the difference between silencing and banning?
1 and 2 are not being followed by all mods, and the mods who aren’t are actively hurting the forum. This is meant to codify these as required guidelines for all mods.
Silencing instead of banning allows you full access to your account, but you simply can’t post during the time where you are silenced. Banning completely locks you out of your account, including ability to read.
Sure seems like we could benefit from actually discussing this before a vote!
Feel free to
I’m confused why this is piggybacking off an entirely different RFC. Surely it should be its own thread?
Because it relates to the issue here, and the RFC process allows this to be done in this manner.
I personally would break these up rather than package them together. 3 and 4 seem reasonable to me on their face. 1 and 2 seem like potential overkill given mods have limited terms and there is an ability to recall mods. Moderating this forum sucks as it is, more micromanaging doesnt seem like the solution to me.
Can we have an RFC about permabanning anyone that calls someone else a mediocre white man
You’re absolutely welcome to bring it up. Why so sensitive?
I’m inclined to support #3 but how would anyone ever find this out?
I’d support some but not all of the other proposed rules if they were re-worded. For example in #2, I think mods engaging is good but a rule requiring it could (and 100% would) be weaponized in bad faith.
meb you are totally off the rails.
you cannot shove through a proposal to vote without the required discussion time by posting it in an “open RFC” thread in an (largely) unrelated topic
what are you doing?
Can we word it in a way that would tell mods that it’s obviously against the community spirit to say things like “ The “job” of our (unpaid) mods is not to respond to your grievances. Grow up.”
