Song is an absolute banger, I believe they were 14 and 15 at time of recording. La was murdered shortly after and Rondo is in prison for life. Really sad

As someone who has now listened to this more than any human should, after Big L’s second verse which is top dog, the second best verse is Jay-Z’s first verse. I’m like you in that I am very much not a Jay-Z fan with the exception of his first album which is pretty good. But facts are facts, he murdered that verse.
Also Big L says at the end of the second verse “I fucked up on one line but it’s aight”, sounding kind of sheepish. I’m still trying to figure out which line he thinks he fucked up on.
