Prepping for the future

I played 90+% online for several years, but switched back to live after getting vaxxed and moving somewhere with extremely good live games. Definitely making more money live, but not this week because I might currently have covid (feels like a normal cold and I can still taste so maybe not).

Kinda jealous of the extremely good live games I hear about in several areas. It’s tough finding live PLO abroad and I’ll be in/around Europe for the next year and I hear pretty much all live games aren’t great due to high rake and general lack of interest.

Just started watching the apple+ adaptation of Asimov’s Foundation and it’s pretty good and all about prepping for the inevitable future downfall of a galactic empire.

It is at first. As it goes on, one of the storylines is way more interesting than the others. But big budget SCI-Fi is must watch IMO

You might find that by the time push comes to shove in the US Portugal has reacted to the terrible idea of having a large number of you pushing property prices beyond the reach of their own young people, and will up the ante somewhat.

That’s if the Portugese government has any sense at all.

Once they start setting up death camps, can’t you just drive to Canada and claim refugee status? That’s my plan.

Don’t you have to be able to convince them that your life is threatened by the regime?

Could be tricky for the wealthy white middle class men.

This seems backward to me, I think that if there is a surge of people with money trying to leave the US then you would having increased competition among countries to attract them.

One of the drivers of nationalism in Europe has been the effect on young people of steep rises in property prices caused by wealthy people elsewhere buying up land/property as investments.

I don’t think market forces alone will have the final say.

They might also consider what contribution large numbers of unemployed Americans will make to the country’s culture and economy when you look at how dysfunctional US society is.

I guess. I think that policy makers will have their eyes literally turn into dollar signs (or Euro signs i guess) like a cartoon character and nothing else will matter. I also think that a lot if not most of nationalism is just racism and the loudest nationalist voices will always be more focused on black and brown immigrants. They’ll manufacture a reason that allowing or even encouraging rich white American immigrants to totally fine.

We’re spending the next couple of years visiting our potential ejection spots should Trump (or a similar threat) win in 2024. Trips planned in order:
Costa Rica
NE US/Canada
Portugal

I’m not expecting that we will need to leave. But I am anticipating that my kids’ quality life will be best maximized elsewhere.

I see where you’re coming from, but racism in Europe isn’t the same as in North America - as well as aimed at black, brown and Jewish people it’s also aimed at other Europeans (usually from poorer countries ldo) eg Brexit and the other anti-EU integration movements, so colour isn’t the only definition.

Don’t some Americans don Canada flags when travelling in Europe?

That’s already happened. Portugal used to be known as the cheap country in Western Europe, but rent prices in Lisbon have spiralled out of control, well beyond what a local salary could afford. Lots of Portuguese, who otherwise love their country, are starting to leave.

I guess they’ve kinda reacted a bit by raising the limits a bit for their Golden Visa in the more desirable areas, but maybe too late?

I’ve been seeing lots of these types of articles popping up, so it sounds like the trend might be irreversible. Same thing happened in Tulum once it became the cool spot for the influencer crowd.

Do you actually have residency there for online poker or are you just moving around intermittantly? Or something else?

I never actually applied for residency in Mexico b/c it was so easy to get a 6-month tourist visa, leave for a few weeks or a month (usually to visit family in USA, but sometimes for a short trip to Colombia/Peru/Brazil), then return and get a fresh 6 months. I’ve gotten 6-7 visas like that over the past 3 years.

However, I’ve recently been reading on Reddit that they’re starting to crack down on foreigners trying to live in Mexico on tourist visas and a lot of people are reporting only getting issued 30 days instead of the usual 180. Residency is not too difficult to get though, just be able to show $20k+ in savings/investments or consistent online earnings of $2k+ a month for 6+ months. If I were planning to stay longer in Mexico, then I’d apply for residency soon. Also, my girlfriend is Mexican and we’ll likely get married in the next year or 2, so that will give us more options.

Additionally, she’ll finally be able to visit my family in the USA, unlike now, where she’d 95% get turned down for a visitor visa b/c lol racism.

In any case, we’re setting our sights on a country in or around Europe to experience something new. She’s never been outside Latin America (only Mexico and Brazil) and I’ve always been enamored with Europe. So we’re gonna try to make that work for a long-term (maybe permanent?) stay.

This is an interesting thread because I basically agree on a gut level, but am just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. Things that make me think that I personally will be generally OK: I’m white, I live in California, I’m male, and I’m a business owner who makes a pretty good living. Things I worry about: I have a trans kid. And I’m Jewish, but I really don’t worry about that much.

I just don’t see uprooting our entire lives and making a break for it, but it’s definitely possible that I am firmly in early-1930’s-Jew-in-Germany territory. I guess we’ll see.

Probably not since I’m not brave enough to resist the authoritarian control of this forum or troll the covid thread.

The Federal government is pretty damn powerful and hedges a lot of big risks. A Republican US Federal government will make the world worse for everyone.
