that too. i was thinking of like a container’s worth of collected rainwater, quick shelter and services for a few dozen people and ability to charge batteries if the grid fails. but i’d still want to be connected during normal times.
The US has two of the largest undefended borders in the world, millions of people with a tiny fraction of your resources have made their way over here despite ICE and Border Patrol, y’all are way overthinking this problem.
The scenario of, or “dream scenario” of the those who want to live in and are preparing for the world where they’re driving around in their 71 Hemi wearing their Stetson making ends meat above everyone else just isn’t a world that likely can happen, imo.
We either get bought out by someone in the East or we end up in some right wing 50s control. Fending off honda motorcycle thieves with the last few boxes of Buckshot pruchased at big5 to safely make it to our deserted campsite isn’t really a possibility.
If it were easy, I’d probably have moved to Montreal a while back, but it seems very convoluted with their points system and I probably wouldn’t come close to qualifying these days.
Apparently your best shot is being sub 30yo w/grad degrees, work in a desirable field, and have decent French knowledge to get enough points to qualify.
I have a small chunk saved and make enough to cover monthly expenses in most places, but even still it’s complicated to qualify for residency in most countries. I’m looking into a couple options in Europe (Portugal, Spain, France) or possibly some place on the periphery of the EU like Georgia or Albania.
portugal is europe’s left coast. would love to live there.
I think more people suffer from “it can happen here” syndrome, when it doesn’t. I am completely on board with the shit that climate change can bring and prolly think it’s worse than the majority of folks here despite being more to the right than almost everyone here.
But a lot of this panic stemmed after a right winger narrowly won in fucking Virginia while the dems hold both chambers and the Prez. Seems a little bit irrational despite the negative affects of it mentally.
I don’t really think so. Several of us have been talking about it for a while. The fact there is a 0.0% chance the voting rights bill gets passed is the real reason for concern.
no taxes on crypto income in portugal and drugs including cocaine have been decriminalized.
vamooooooooooo*
You can get citizenship by buying a roughly $300,000 house/property. And Portugal is awesome. That’s quite high on my list.
I will concede that you have a deeper understanding in this area and that you have been far more entrenched in it than I have so I take credence in your take on it. I’ve just seen a lot of this type of behavior stem from emotion and I’ve seen it for many years on 22 and I just have come to the conclusion that a lot of these demons go away if we just burn our phones or comps.
I agree with you here. I don’t think the insane right wingers who we all view as evil see themselves as evil. They actually think the opposite that they are the hero who will save this country. How did they get to this point? Facebook, AM Radio, Fox News/Breitbart/Newsmax, etc.
That trend won’t magically reverse though and almost all of them are way too far gone to ever detach themselves from their current reality. Even if somehow we stay a civilized society would you really like to live in a red state where 50-75% of the people around you are that? Of course not. So I get if you live in NYC/Portland/Bay Area how this might seem like foolishness to think it is time to hit the eject button but I can guarantee you that it absolutely is not in red America. And ya sure, I could move to one of those places but there are much better, and more importantly cheaper options elsewhere.
They also don’t mostly have the insane 2nd-3rd Trump standard deviation hellscape probabilities also. I am certainly not in the group that thinks it is more likely than not we have drones/trains. I just think most of the US is already a hellscape and any further movement towards that reaches a tipping point where I live that it isn’t tenable to spend the limited time I have on this earth there.
Have you considered installing gutter guards?
Wat?
When your gutters become clogged, water will be unable to properly divert away from your home. Instead, the water will spill over the side of your gutters, leading to a number of different issues like foundation damage, structural issues, mold and mildew and basement flooding.
Pretty easy problem to avoid with quality gutter guards.
Says the guy who lives in Oklahoma.
If any of you are really serious about any of this you probably should have started planning a long time ago and your preparations should already be well under way. By the time it becomes obvious that it’s time to go, it’ll be too late to start. Good luck trying to buy a homestead or Portuguese citizenship when there are tens of thousands of other people with 100x your net worth trying to do the exact same thing.
I plan to marry gregogoat
I have mentioned it before but I left a major city and bought property on an island in Washington state that’s connected to mainland by a ferry. I’m building the house myself. I will be burying some large propane tanks, generator, rain catchment system and few other things. It will still be on the grid though. I’m sure I could comfortably sustain for couple weeks to month with set up.
I’m not doing this because I think society is going to collapse. I plan on buying some other property around the area and building houses to sell. I really think climate change will be an issue and people are going to flood into the northern areas of United States. If I’m wrong I’ll just take my boat and try to escape to Canada!
Yah but they’re changing it so that the 300k minimum no longer applies to a property in one of the desirable areas (Lisbon, Porto, along the coast). The minimum in those areas will be more like 550k. But I think most here would probably qualify for a D7 visa.
