Prepping for the future

Keep in mind things that help keep blue states livable, like sensible gun laws, about to get ban hammered

You’re correct in the sense that a Republican federal government will equate to a totalitarian federal government. The loss of democracy and hence the loss of hope is the real danger in my opinion. Republican and Democratic Administrations and Congresses come and go, but dictatorships are there for life.

It still blows my mind that everyday Republicans are perfectly fine with pissing away everything Americans fought and died for. They’ll simply declare that there was voter fraud and Trump should be proclaimed President again. Forget about any evidence of voter fraud. Who needs it? If the Supreme Court, or Congress, or State Legislatures, or Mike Pence, or insurrectionists, or the military says he’s the President, then he’s the President. Like why the fuck not? And then when he or his kid loses again, then its rigged again, so he wins again. And by then for sure, we’re done at a democracy. And then try criticizing Trump on this forum or anywhere else. We’ll be in jail.

With regard to changes due to climate change I dont think that Europe is the best place to make your final stand. Regions like India and Africa will become uninhabitable much quicker than other parts of the world and they are connected to Europe or only narrowly divided by water. At some point the refugees will start coming in masses.
I assume one of the biggest factors will be access to clean water. Coastal regions with the desalination devices are only a temporary fix since rising water levels will eventually force people to move further inland. Not sure if Canada will be the promised land either since you have some rough winters and blizzards in this area as well and I am not sure if they will cease to exist if it gets warmer or become more violent when the circulation gets fucked up further.

A more short/mid term risk is another economic crash. Prices are going up and they will continue to go up. Yeah you can mitigate shortterm if you continue to rely on coal only midterm the food production will suffer further and prices go up anyway. Solution would be far less meat but who wants to hear that.
Anyway that is my biggest concern that some economic desaster kills my savings because of some hyperinflation and so on. People will become more agitated when they can afford less and less. The longer we wait to tax the rich in a proper manner the bigger the risk in my opinion that we go back into an age of feudalism or so. Dont forget Bill Gates already is the biggest farmer in the US. And even if you dont think your military is worth a damn there still enough trained killers around who can be hired by rich people to defend their wealth.

Shiiiiit, for a mere 100k investment in my ̶b̶a̶n̶k̶ ̶a̶c̶c̶o̶u̶n̶t̶ 10 acres ya’ll welcome to bunker-down in Uruguay.

What do people think about urban homesteading in a major Midwestern city?

If you were going to make a US prepper refuge east of the Mississippi, where would you build it?

That does not fit my geographic constraints.

I think we call that “squatting.”

oh oops i thought west for some reason. maybe you are thinking of like ann arbor or lexington.

Only was there for 3 days, but Montevideo was a great city.

If I was of retiring age right now and wanted to leave the US, it would be very high on the list.

Punta del Este in Uruguay had the best poker games that I found in South America, so it’s got that going for it! Kind of boring and pretty damn expensive compared to the rest of South America though.

Montevideo was kinda cool, but definitely felt sketchier than I was expecting.

Put me on the list of people who are trying to find a good way to make money online so I can live on the beach in Mexico or Central America. It’s too bad I loathe online poker.

Tons of great options in Mexico. Mazatlan is a bit under the radar, but they have a ton of infrastructure projects underway and will probably be super popular in 10-15 years. It’s a good mix of not super gringo-y like Cancun, Los Cabos, and Vallarta, but still a decent amount of tourists (tons of Canadians) so you can still get by ok in English, and also has a great historical center and actual city behind it, so you don’t feel like you’re just in beach Las Vegas. La Paz also a solid option.

I was thinking something more like Detroit.

Yea those sound like good options, although I might want to go even smaller. You ever been on the Oaxacan coast?

Sadly no, but most people rave about Oaxaca, although everyone always says that the internet in Puerto Escondido is spotty at best, so maybe it doesn’t have the infrastructure for a long-term stay.

Philippines is a decent place to live btw.

Fairly easy to enter on a tourist visa and just keep rolling it over.
