Potential outcomes of Russian invasion of Ukraine discussion (WWIII/nukes?)

Pretty sure from what I have read in the past your best chances is southern Oregon on the coast If you survive it all. Plus to that is I’m sure there would be lots of available tee times at Bandon Dunes.

Why would you want to survive the initial stages of a global thermonuclear war?

Well, there are a lot of ways to game it out where it doesn’t end in total global devastation, or where say the eastern seaboard gets destroyed but the Midwest is inhabitable.

So I think given that I live 35 miles outside a major East Coast city, having a plan where I survive a first wave of attacks has a lot of value.

Putting another 15 miles between me and there FAST and then another 25 miles within a few hours to avoid fallout could be enough to make it possible to survive relatively unharmed and relocate to a place that wasn’t hit.

Right, something like 8-10 miles away to survive the blast, I think it’s like 20-25 to avoid the immediate radiation, and about 25 more to avoid temporary blindness. So I figure getting about 55 miles away gets me out of all of the ~immediate consequences, then it comes down to wind direction and fallout.

Minus to that is I live outside Philadelphia, so… Could be a place to go after the dust settles, but not a place to initially survive.

Because you can always shoot yourself in the head later? Some people just have the will to survive, man. People lived before civilization.

Because it might not make it to the later stages. Maybe Russia hits all the major east coast military bases and cities, we fire back at them, and some general caps Putin, and disarms their nukes and it ends. I’m going to try to survive as long as I have a non-zero chance of it, and as long as there’s a place to go where I can live.

Exactly, as long as there’s a chance of keeping my girlfriend and myself alive, I’m going to take it.

I personally like living and think there’s nothing after I’m dead

I have some iodine tablets, hand held crank radio, 500 gallon water tank with fresh water at all times, sleeping bags, cash, rifle, shotgun some other stuff but I can’t even remember… Hopefully none of it has expired. I mean it helped me sleep better for a couple nights. I just was more worried about earthquake or random mistake handling nukes or some suicidal military person wanting to take a bunch with him. Total nuclear war it’s game over.

The plan for the future thread or whatever it was called turned into a prepper thread. I think this might too.

How many people would you kill in an attempt to avoid nuclear war?

Do I get to choose them???

It’s the trolley problem with a big freakin’ trolley.

The second point is my fear right now. Is there a way for Putin to say “ooops my bad” and end this war while also leaving him feeling secure in his place as Russian dictator.

If Putin’s own actions have left him without a plausible off-ramp, then there’s no sense in worrying about the things we can’t change. Would we rather die with honor or live in shame?

None of us know. The idea is to stake your claim on what your gut says is the most probable.

My gut thinks it’s a tie between all the options but downfall of humanity.
