I don’t have a specific example but I do think Rugby has been the best poster here for a couple of years now. He’s consistently willing to engage in good faith and explain his thought process on many issues.
I’m so much more bitter and mean and hopeless than when this site started it’s hard to think of anything good that I have learned. I could probably pick someone defeatist and misanthropic and say I’ve learned from them, or I should probably learn to be forgiving, with @WichitaDM as a great example, but I probably won’t.
I’ve changed my mind on lots of things due to posters
My politics have shifted leftward significantly due to many posters, some of whom are no longer posting here and I used to battle with. With this shift there are tons of individual policies I have changed my mind on including borders, policing, capitalism, regulation, the legal system, the US electoral system, taxation, etc.
I’ve changed my mind on some climate change issues due to discussions of technology with a few posters including rugby.
I’ve come to appreciate some horror films due to several posters.
I was recently convinced to hate Star Wars a little less due to people here.
I changed some crypto investment strategies over the years due to discussions here.
I am sure there are several others I am forgetting.
I doubt anyone remembers me from the 2P2 days, but generally that forum and this one pulled me out of my foray into libertarianism after being raise Christian conservative. I can’t really attribute it to one particular poster, though.
great idea for a thread. i’m gonna have to think about it, bc i’ll definitely be able to come up with a few. for now, LFS is the one that comes to mind immediately. over the years, he’s helped me see sobriety in a way that is comforting instead of a challenge.
maybe that’s not the best way to put it, generally speaking, he’s a role model whose words have helped me a lot.
This whole group from 2plus2 to now have positively influenced my political evolution. I started out as a spoiled Republican and have become something much different over the last almost twenty years. I recently mentioned it in the About Moderation thread but microbet in particular had an impact on me early on to get me to evolve my way of thinking.
If you go back to 2p2, where I started as much more apolitical, I have to give a shout-out to LedOut (don’t know him, had to look it up) for starting the “Bernie Sanders is a straight up BOSS” thread.
Yeah I was definitely raised in to be super Republican and wouldn’t say I ever fully bought into that but I think being on the politics board at 2+2 during the times of the Iraq war and the global financial crisis, definitely helped my leftward shift in my mid 20s
