Hadn’t been paying much attention but shit happening in Salt Lake City rn. Protest at Capitol with cops keeping protesters away from the entrance. Very close to me. May walk over and post a pic.
The Salt Lake City Police Department headquarters building was vandalized with spray-painted messages, and an unoccupied SLCPD vehicle has been overturned, smashed and set on fire.
Good title change. No one really insists on this meaning anymore, but a Greek tragedy is typically a story where the hero dies at the end due to his own poor choices. Not a good connotation!
Generally a politician is waiting for an event like this that primes the constituency’s emotions. It happened after 9/11 when American fear and resentment was stoked so high that Bush rode a wave of national approval for retaliation, America America rah rah rah.
Trump could have turned any one of these catastrophies into a chance for unity and fawning adoration, but it’s hard to imagine him fucking this up much worse.
I only lurked once a month or less, but I thought that thread title started as sincere when the GOP nominated Trump and everyone thought Jesus, they’re just handing the election to Hillary. Did that thread really start as a joke? I feel like you’re taking one of the few positive pieces of 2+2 propaganda away from me.
I think you’re getting confused a little. The sarcasm was operating on ‘tragic’, not ‘death’, like people did think the Reps were screwed but thought it was good. I thought the TDotRP thread pre-dated Trump, too, thought it was on that demographics-are-destiny kick, could be wrong though.
As of now, for that’s just downtown. The protest/situation currently taking place is in Hollywood. LA is huge, would be shocked if they do it for the whole city.
Pretty glad I left early. I am not down for my kid being in danger of harm or arrest.
I was there for a while and the crowd was all typical LA people. Lots of kids. Very surprised there was any violence.
someone up thread mentioned that the cops should just let the protesters through, etc. Seems that’s what they’re doing/did in La Mesa. They knew it was coming, shut down the freeway, and just let them march. There’s nothing to loot or destroy, and the cops successfully steered the protest/march into areas they could “control” without violence.
