While sad still better than I expected
A “just following orders” defense? Where have I heard that before?
It’s hilarious. 19 prior issues about excessive force? Here, you are a trainer!
Chauvin was training new cops? Then this was intended to be part of the training, like duh.
I was thrown on the hood of my car and threatened with arrest in front of my own house for the sole crime of driving by when a cop needed to prove how bad-ass he was to the woman he was training.
maybe not a good idea to billy club the guy who has the power to fire you.
No one said they were smart, I guess.
Foreman said he understood the frustration of the community, but also said he would not have been as restrained as he saw officers being when confronted by protesters.
He would have hit himself way more than 5 times.
and in case you’re wondering
Foreman said he was not angry with Chicago police.
“What would that accomplish?” Foreman asked. “It would not get us anywhere.”
dammit
The two who spoke up were both in training, and Chauvin was their training officer? That’s a pretty big fact that is going to change how this plays out. I think both probably end up getting pretty generous deals to testify against him, and I think that if these facts bear out, that’s ok. They’re new on the job, they spoke up when the other vet officer there didn’t, so the next step would have been drawing down on Chauvin or physically assaulting him.
I’m using those words because that’s what the charges would say, had they done that. In the world that existed on that day, they’d have been fired and charged with assaulting a fellow officer.
Obviously that’s the move we want cops to make - to stand up and protect lives, but do we want two guys who were brand new on the job to do hard time for asking a commanding officer to stop, but not drawing guns on him or assaulting him?
I think losing their jobs and the right to be cops, having it on their record, and pleading guilty to a lesser charge with a sentencing deal for probation and a healthy amount of community service in exchange for testifying against Chauvin to make sure he gets nailed for the full 2nd degree charge might be more justice all around.
How do others feel?
That was really power and also true.
Life comes at you fast.
That was an interesting read, because it made me think about the possibility that even if the CO’s determine something to be a lawful order, you could have a lot of soldiers decide not to follow it because it’s unlawful in their eyes, leaving the decision up to an Army prosecutor, which creates a massive national news story as troops are being sent out against protesters.
Even if they gave these orders to 500 and only 10 disobeyed, it would be massive news.
Exhibit number 1,672,985 for why we need an entirely new “system”. It is not just the police but the entire existing structure that needs to be abolished/replaced.
Did you guys know that Chauvin isn’t racist because he has an Asian wife? That completely undermines the BLM movement. From a POS on Facebook.
That’s so commonplace (that someone with a non-white friend or spouse can’t be racist) that I do believe it’s a genuine misunderstanding a lot of the time.
