Police Murder George Floyd Then Riot Nationwide (Links to Streams in OP)

Haven’t watched it yet but I’m a fan of Rising.

I don’t understand - why are cops in schools?

The copping up of schools was mainly a “war on drugs” era thingee.

I gotta +1 this too. It’s something like 1/3rd of all police nationwide, and in many departments with a civil service preference for veterans, the majority will be ex-military. I know a bunch of local cops and almost all of them served.

True but they’re not happening at the platoon level. General Thusandsuch is plotting a coup and his drones are dutifully following his orders and that’s how he is (sometimes) successful.

@PocketChads I’m looking up Huntsville, and the police actions seem reprehensible. I have spent quite a bit of time there for work so I know the town well; it’s a tame ass town but also endearing.

https://www.al.com/news/2020/06/stand-and-shout-protests-continue-across-alabama.html

This news article reads like a military report:

Earlier, in Huntsville, protesters were marching in the streets after their permit expired at 6:30 p.m. Police ordered all to leave. Police did not act for more than an hour. Then came the the influx of trooper cars and gas. Some protesters fled into one corner of Big Spring Park. Reporters were kept from the site but helicopters were overhead and more gas was used. Rubber bullets were fired. Armed officers blocked access.

This is last night. Whatever fuckery that was described from Tuesday was separate.

Totally outrageous violent overreaction and escalation by police. And once again, even though only 10-15 cities are making the news regularly, the problem of overzealous, violent police is nationwide and potentially worse in smaller towns and cities than large ones.

That’s a self-selected bunch of ex-military.

I always thought cops in schools was a post-Columbine thing.

We have cops in schools because from my cold dead hands hth

It’s both. There have been cops in the schools for Black kids for a long time. Now they are in pretty much all the schools.

Why do the police intentionally allow looting during riots ?

to sway public opinion against the protest message?

It’s both. The French Revolution happened because soldiers were defecting instead of killing large numbers of people (women’s march on Versailles). The German Navy mutanied at the end of WWI and there was a largely forgotten socialist revolution.

Yup. Military experience is often used as a replacement for being in the police academy or having higher education.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of people who shoot unarmed POC are ex-military.

We are not here to stop the looting, we are here to pepper spray high school students with signs.

I know cops and they often aren’t thinking that way. They’re given a job and they try to focus on doing it. As they told me, there isn’t really time to think about the political implications of their actions.

Of course, I stated that there are political implications inherent in the actions you take while on the job. Not saying that cops are stupid, but the ones I spoke to aren’t really keen on abstract thinking. They don’t question the job they’re given to do. They just do it.

Also I haven’t met a female cop that wasn’t a borderline sociopath.

I suppose it’s overcompensating to fit into a more masculine occupation but the aggression expressed is well beyond any degree of normalcy.

I don’t mean literally. Literally, they became an occupying force. And a lot of this is, like pyatnitsky was getting at, someone becomes an enemy and you dehumanize them. My point is that that is well established between cops and the public everywhere. It’s also established with soldiers in an occupation.

Because you can’t prevent crimes and suppress civil society at the same time. When they are out suppressing civil society they DGAF about crimes.

Most people have what the police do 180 wrong. Their #1 job, and the reason there are so damn many of them, is to suppress civil society at a moments notice. That’s why they exist, full stop. But, when they aren’t busy doing just that right at the moment… they got a side job handing our tickets, and a minuscule number do that CSI/L&O shit too.
