Police Murder George Floyd Then Riot Nationwide (Links to Streams in OP)

Curfew in Salt Lake City extended a week. Yesterday there wasn’t much going on in the Capitol area. Lot of cops lounging around, “patrolling” the grounds. They had people there sandblasting the graffiti off concrete surfaces.

That’s my PM! :canada: :canada:

We need awards for the ultimate tone deaf tweets. Like the Darwin Awards but for irony.

Right wing Christians legitimately believe they are oppressed. It is one of the absolute worst consequences of conservative media. It would never even occur to Aunt Betty to be upset about muslims (she never sees or talks to any) if not for the derposphere. Think how worked up rural red america got about the “ground zero mosque,” which had zero even theoretical impact on their life.

We arent ultimately going to do anything. There will be some diplomatic feather-ruffling, that’s it. What else would we do?

The fallout continues to be reputational. Recent polls have something like 60% of Australians holding an unfavourable view of the US, this in supposedly a steadfast ally. (Trumps approval rating is around 25-30%, so that’s most of the people who are favourable). 55% of Australians believe the US can act responsibly in the world, down from 83% in 2011. A recent poll about handling of COVID showed 90% thought the US had handled it poorly, a figure higher than both the UK and Italy’s ratings in the same poll. Etc etc.

I’m self quarantining until I can get a Covid test. Sunday was the only exposure I’ve had outside of grocery stores since March. Stay safe.

More stuff from France. The moments when the police decided gas and bullets were needed.

And what the Minister of the Interior thinks. (Not sure of the US equivalent, it’s like Home Secretary in the UK and is one of, if not the, most important ministries)

“Violence has no place in a democracy. Nothing justifies the unrest this evening in Paris while demonstrations are forbidden for all of our health. I salute the forces of order and safety for the way they handled it and their calm approach.”

PS On the health stuff today was the day France more-or-less completely re-opened—cafés, restaurants and so on (just outside stuff, but they all have that here.) Anecdotally then it was the first day for months I think just had normal traffic, e.g. the café on the corner near me was full at 7pm.
