He was baffled by the lack of training in the police departments and their inability to know when they should be scared of someone or not.

This is not the whole problem, but it’s a huge problem. One of many huge problems, and a big part of the reason for my take.

About police so-called crowd control tactics: people got to understand that all that gear, and all that doctrine, serves one exact particular purpose: strike suppression. They otherwise use it on crowds as effectively training exercises. It’s just that simple.

This seems pretty out there to me. Are there examples in the last 20 years or so of the police violently suppressing strikes?

Hiring preferences for former service members that tend to benefit whites disproportionately make it harder to build police forces that resemble and understand diverse communities.

Regardless of who we have policing once we fix this problem, they need to be policing their own communities.
