Wait, is there basically no regulation or gaming control board in Texas? A card room can refuse to cash out chips – so they aren’t required to have that on hand? And allegations of a theft seems huge. Wtf. This seems like the sort of story that winds up leading to new rules and regulations.
Ain’t happening.
I found myself thinking “Surely there’s no way Johnny Chan is cash strapped enough for it to come to this.”
Then I remembered him being on one of the televised games and wearing a t-shirt that costs 5 figures and making it known.
Lifetime poker players being bad with money!? I refuse to countenance such nonsense.
Texas card houses exist in a gray area. It’s illegal to profit from running a gambling establishment, so they operate under the fiction of being a social club where members can do what they want, including play poker. Of course, everyone who goes there is playing poker.
A scandal might lead to some sort of crackdown or new laws making the clubs more explicitly illegal.
I forget how they make money. They charge like a “club fee” instead of a rake, right? Like they are some kind of country club?
Though how you get randos and fish into the doors under a model like that is beyond me
Typically there is a membership fee of $10/d or $30/m and then time charge of 10-13/h.
When you have games as juicy as Texas it’s easy.
Matusow, a guy who was recently super upset when he loses 1 BI at 2/5 is going to absorb 1mm in losses. Sure thing.
I hate how casinos deal in cash for these big payouts. After I got 2nd this weekend they cashed me out with 106 $100 bills with like 130 people on the room. Then I have to walk to my car and drive home hoping not to get jumped or followed.
You can always request a cheque. I did so after a mid 5 figure score in Regina.
Most casinos also can have security walk you to your car if requested.
Some casinos won’t give checks. When my local casino wouldn’t give one to the guy who got the bad beat jackpot, he left and gassed up his car before accepting the payout so that he wouldn’t have to stop on the way home.
You just gotta have some buddies rent the exact same car as you, black out the plates, everyone pull into a big garage and shut the door, then when you open it again everyone peels out in different directions. This should minimize the risk at least.
I think you guys are confused the nft notsosubtle brag thread is a few clicks down
I tried that a few years ago and was told no. Hadn’t tried again. Maybe I should.
I’ve had a friend or two play in Texas on a stream and feel uncomfortable being known as the Canadian playing in a big game.
Have a friend who says they were followed in Louisana I think for 30+ minutes on a very weird route.
Once after day 1 of a 1k I missed a deer by an inch on the highway, never had a run in with any humans though. Not sure how many places do Cheques, I’d have to be out of town and have 10k+ on me to consider it I think, which has only happened in Niagara which I felt fully safe in.
I was followed home from a poker room about 10 years ago. 3am with no one around and I get confronted in front of my apartment by a junkie with a knife.
He threatened to kill me and put the knife right onto my stomach. (Had a mark from the pressure but didn’t get stabbed). Gave him $10k cash, he shoved me into my car and took off.
I was able to positively ID him in a line up and he ended up getting 8 years in prison. His driver got like 5 years.
Dude sent me a $50 restitution check every 2 months for the last 8 years (part of his requirement for getting parole). I got a call from the DA like 6 months ago to let me know he was getting paroled.
Haven’t gotten any $ from him since.
Be vigilant leaving casinos. People are fucking scumbags.
I usually drive home super late at night and most of my drive is highway. There are very few cars on the road at that time and I often drive at or below the speed limit, so it will probably be obvious if someone is following me. I also have an attached garage for my apartment, so someone can’t intercept me at my door.
