I doubt it, I’m not married to doctrine, and I’m really good at adjusting to table conditions no matter what monkeys are at the table. I just really like to have the rock solid ABC foundation down, just so I know when to deviate from it and why. Doing otherwise just seems like clicking buttons to me.

This is very old, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it still translates well. Maybe @clovis8 @Aofrantic or @funcrusherplus can chime in, seems like they all play some PLO.

I also have the Hwang PLO big pot strategy book, but haven’t read it yet, if anyone has strong feelings one way or another on it.

My guess is that you’re going to want to limp a ton more than optimal strategy would, keep SPRs relatively low, and just play postflop with a very value-oriented game.

Hwang’s book is good for your basic low stakes game. Preflop hand selection is very important for these sorts of games and I think he has the best explanation for what hands you should play.

The optimal strategy in these games is probably close to nut peddling with a few selected bluffs.

No no no. If your opponents are playing 75%+ vpip the optimal strategy is not playing 15% vpip and only the nuts. Sure you will win but way less than you could. This is your whole misunderstanding of poker in a nutshell.

Disagree. Wide range vs Wide range spots are the hardest situations in poker which is why HU is so completely unsolved. When your range crushes your opponent’s at all times, it’s generally easy to print money.

How i tend to play in these types of games is to play many more speculative hands, however, I did notice a big uptick in my winnings when I started avoiding the difficult and annoying spots that often came with playing these types of hands (being flush over flushed is a good example, that was a huge leak of mine)

Seems like a strawman.

I thought HU was easier to solve because multi-way is much more complex.

multiway is only complex to people because the software they’re using inexplicably needs 64 gigs of memory to solve HU ranges. to me it isn’t complex but I’m a feel player fish.

My understanding is that multiway is more difficult to solve because of the potential for multiple Nash equilibria and the ability of players to form implicit alliances.

100% not true in PLO

Lol you said preflop hand selection is the most important and you should nut peddle. Quite the straw man I constructed!

15% seems ridiculously low.

Using Hwang’s book, his starting hand categories add up to about 17%, some of which you fold to heavy preflop action. Then, he has additional marginal hands --three broadway cards with a dangler, big pairs with bad sidecards, and bad suited aces–that make up another 32% of hands. I would play almost all of them in late position in a limped pot, fold all of them in a three-bet pot, and fold most of them in a single-raised pot.

My estimate is that a good preflop VPIP for live full ring should be under 35%. Mine is in the 20s.

The general trend in poker is that you should play tighter and sometimes more passively on the first betting round in loose games vs tight games. That includes selecting hands preflop and choosing which hands to continue with postflop. The bad players in the loose PLO games are playing anything double-suited, hands with small pairs, and top-gapped rundowns. You want to play hands that dominate them.

Marginal hands have more value in heads-up pots where you have more bluffing and semi-bluffing opportunities. In loose games with a lot of multi-way action, marginal hands actually have less value. Yes, you have better pot odds in a seven-way pot, but you usually need to make a hand to win because you go to showdown way more often. In PLO, that hand often has to be the nuts.

Karma.

Dropped $1400 in my first 5 hands at the table last night. 14 hours later I’m at -300 and find myself making small errors from being tired, and have to pack it in. So much for bragging.

Not getting railroaded in a night you’re stuck big early is still kind of a brag! All the players here who don’t win 100% of their sessions would be pretty happy about that result :p

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’m ecstatic about the result, just think it’s ironic it happened immediately after the brag. Very happy with how I kept it together after the shotgun blast in the beginning. Had maybe 5 minutes of shell-shock, then it was just back to work. Managed to joke with the table about it through it though, so proud of that too.
