cth2 got got as well, or maybe that happened earlier.

There was a rumor that they were going to mass ban “hate” subreddits, and turns out it actually happened. https://www.redditstatic.com/banned-subreddits-june-2020.txt

Banned subreddits with > 10 daily users. Subreddits after the top 10 are
blurred.

Entirely happy to sacrifice cth for gendercritical to go down. Back to Mumsnet, haters. the_donald was doing pretty piss-poor numbers, considering. Another enthusiasm litmus test looking bad for Trump.

Thinking about some gendercritical exile guy having to RP as a woman to fit in on Mumsnet

Was the CTH reddit that bad or is this just Reddit trying to get “both sides”?

Depends what you mean by ‘bad’, I mean I left there about a year ago because it started to suck. People used to brigade other subreddits and stuff, which is very frowned on, and there was occasional talk of violence, though almost always comedic. It’s probably not the greatest injustice ever on a strict reading of reddit’s rules, but it’s absurd to see the place listed along with gendercritical and the_donald.

I’m almost done with the Hamilton biography. Much of the press those days was little better than partisan twitter trolls (intermixed with near genius level essays/arguments from people like Hamilton, Madison, Jefferson, and others).

Same goes for communications around the time of the Civil War.

Harris makes a fair point, but it’s arguably not as much of a social experiment as what’s being done in China with social scores.

Or, say, mass incarceration in the US with attendant long term personal and reputational effects. Society/History is kind of an ongoing experiment.

@hokie had it right, it’s just both-sidesing. It’s just Reddit still not getting it. Can’t ban a bunch of fascist subreddits without also kicking out those disgusting lefties who (checks notes) sometimes speak in uncouth and ham-handed ways about the police!

The whole centrist Rally to Restore Sanity was an embarrassment.

Stewart and Colbert are kind of inherently conservative-ish guys. Informed comedians/artists to be sure, but Colbert is a legitimate Catholic from South Carolina and Stewart was a sports bro in college. I think they’ve continued to evolve and are open minded, but they are odd vessels to reconfigure existing tropes.

edit: that said, they’ve done yeoman’s work destroying Fox for young centrists.

I’m kind of weirdly anti-mindfulness, but his atheism stuff is quite good, and he’s pretty good on consciousness and philosophy of mind and its intersection with neuroscience (in which he has a phd).

That place and cth2 were already quarantined.

Quite frankly, they were both useless cesspools of shitty memes.

Just listened to a new Waking Up episode for the first time in ages only to realize that he only makes the first half of the episode free. Then you have to pay a monthly fee for the second half of each one. What kind of moron is he? Why would I want to listen to a guy dumb enough to do something like that?

It’s funny because Harris’ main argument is for nuance and hearing out arguments, though i suspect he’s personally skeptical of Murray, etc. I think he grants them too much, but by giving them any credit he gets lumped in with their views, which is just inaccurate.

That Harris’ subreddit sometimes shits on him is a testiment to the quality of much of his work and the type of audience it attracts. I doubt you’d see something similar with Chapo, to say nothing of Rogan.

LOL

Talk about mental gymnastics there! I bet a lot of shitty musicians used that rationalizing to justify their continued existence.

A bunch of those people exist on reddit just to shit on Sam and do nothing else because he deserves it, especially after paywalling the second half of all his episodes.

At least give him some credit for not accepting ads. It’s pretty punk.

No it isn’t. Sam takes these weird stands that make no sense. No advertising company dictates how a podcaster works. Either they know the show and want to advertise on it or they don’t. He can do what Dan Carlin does and only advertise things that he personally uses and approves of without a moral quandry. The guy gave up his Patreon stream which was a huge part of his revenue because fucking Sargon of Akkad got banned for violating Patreon’s hate speech policy. Toss those two flubs on top of paywalling his episodes and it shows that he has terrible business instincts.

just like CTH!
