One thing I’ve learned from my interneting is that a really significant number of people are salty about pet owners bringing their pets in public places. I was inspired to post this by a thread in the Costco subreddit about somebody with their dog in a store in SD, but I’ve seen a lot of stuff along these lines.
A few thoughts from me on the subject: I personally can’t imagine being bothered by this unless the pet in question is making noise, going to the bathroom someplace, or jumping on somebody. But it is clear that some people are angered by the very sight of an animal.
My dog is my constant companion, but I don’t bring her into stores etc. She’s pretty introverted and doesn’t want that anyway, and I am aware this pisses a lot of people off so I wouldn’t do it regardless. If I’m meeting somebody for coffee and she’s with me I will have her sit with me at an outdoor cafe or something.
I am very against the “service animal” scam. Pretending your chihuahua is a service animal makes life harder for people with actual service animals.
So where does UP stand on this?
Bonus photo: in Colombia people bring their pets everywhere, it was wild. Like, a fancy restaurant at 9PM and somebody’s got their German Shepherd with them. This photo is from a coffee place in Bogota.
Our dog is a problem dog in that she reacts to other dogs. So we never take her to cafes or breweries etc. If someone else had a dog there, she might raise a ruckus.
We take her in Home Depot sometimes because she lives to sniff all the products and she likes people. It’s pretty easy to avoid other dogs. She also loves to go in auto repair shops and the like. I always ask the owners first. I’ve never had anyone give us the stink-eye for having a dog in places like that. I try to keep her away from people, as I know some people just don’t like dogs
Seems pretty common in Home Depot - and is specifically called out in the Costco thread I referenced above.
I guess maybe it’s just as simple as some people disliking dogs so intensely that they don’t want to be anywhere around them. Which just simply doesn’t compute in my brain, but different strokes and all that.
There’s def an east coast vs west coast divide here too. People bring their pets into the wework office we have in Seattle. If you did that in Boston you’d probably get HR called on you
When we moved our office we specifically chose a building that advertised itself as pet-friendly, though of course they whipped out a lease addendum that is pretty strict. When we’re all in the office at the same time (one day per week) there are typically three dogs there. It’s the best.
There’s a Toddler playground behind my house with about 6 “No Dogs Allowed” signs in there and people wll bring their dogs in there. Usually when there are no kids, but we’ve found multiple dog poops in there over the past year.
People being their dogs on the normal beach when there is a specific dog beach a mile away from where we are.
These people are jerks and should be sent straight to jail.
I’m not sure when everybody decided that densely populated cities are places that everybody should be able to own dogs but they just aren’t.
We’ve been traveling thru about a dozen countries with our chihuahua over the past 3 years and the differences in pet acceptance by country are pretty stark.
Hands down, the 2 most pet friendly countries are Turkey and then Brazil. Turkish people are just lovely and super kind with all animals. In Turkey, we’ll occasionally ask at a restaurant or café if it’s ok to bring in our dog and the reaction is usually like, well duh, obviously it’s ok.
Sadly, Thailand is one of the worst. The people are generally friendly with our dog, but the rules are quite restrictive. You cannot even take the dog in any of the parks, which doesn’t make much sense. The sidewalks are super pet unfriendly as well as they are often small and motorbikes are super unpredictable (they will often ride on sidewalks as well). In fact, we can’t even carry the dog through the park in a closed pet carrier (nor public transport for that matter). Luckily we live 3 minutes walk from one of the few dog parks in the city and chihuahuas are very low energy (like Trump). I have no idea what the owners of larger and more energetic breeds are doing, unless they live in houses w/a yard.
Yah, this is the main issue. Sadly, a large portion of people are assholes and of course this extends to how they control (or don’t control) their pets. I couldn’t ever imagine just leaving dog shit on the ground, but it’s par for the course for many pet owners. Or leaving your dog off leash when you aren’t 100% certain it can interact ok with other animals or humans. Unfortunately, a few bad owners ends up ruining it for everybody else.
girl in the drive-through pharmacy was begging me to bring him inside the store so they could give him pets, yeah you don’t want that lol.
he loves people, he barks (loudly) at other dogs he doesn’t know. that’s probably my fault as i didn’t know how to socialize him when he was young, i’m not gonna put my lack of dog training on anyone else.
We tried to socialize ours when she was young, puppy socialization classes, dog training, etc.
But at some point a flip switched, and she got aggressive when on the leash and when other dogs barked at us. Strangely she seems to do fine in day care, I guess bc we’re not around. The dog whisperers might say that she feels the need to protect us, so we must have not displayed enough leadership? But she’s pretty obedient except around other dogs.
I think some dogs just don’t do well with other dogs. We did DNA test and found out she is half Staffordshire, which explains a lot. Damn shelter told us half boxer. We didn’t know that there are no pit bull breeds in shelters, only lab boxer mixes
I have brought my dog into Home Depot but don’t like seeing dogs in grocery stores. Costco is like a mix of the two so I’d lean towards nah, don’t bring them near food
But I also don’t think twice about dogs in restaurants so I guess I’m not consistent in wanting pets away from food, hm
my dog has doggy friends, a few neighbors, my friends, etc. but if he sees another black dog he’s gonna bark lol.
he doesn’t do anything, sniffs noses/butts whatever, but nobody else knows that.
even off leash he wouldn’t approach another dog if he was with me. like we’ll be on the porch and one can walk past and he’ll bark and whine but he won’t leave the porch.
I’d settle for people consistently not letting their dogs run off leash in public parks and apartment complexes, which seems to be happening with increasing frequency.
The dogs that you don’t want to be around are invariably owned by people you also don’t want to be around. Conversely, the very worst people often are at their best when confronted with a cute doggo. The math is in favor of bringing your pets imo.
