This might be a big story. 8.7 earthquake off Russia. It was shallow and those types tend to be more dangerous. Warnings for Alaska and Hawaii. Tsunami watch for CA, OR, and WA.
Full-alert warnings in Japan. 3-meter waves expected in many areas. Sirens. Full TV coverage. The works.
Japan should get hit relatively soon right?
Thanks for the alert. It’s a good day to have the coastal range between me and the ocean
We’re close to the beach, but it goes uphill almost right away.
Tsunamis are no joke. If you’re anywhere near the coast, get the hell away.
Imminent, they’re saying, with it expecting to hit the Tokyo area around 11:30.
Police in Hawaii driving on beach with lights on telling people to evacuate and everyone looking around like “Why?”
I’ll see what the warnings are like, but in my area there are “tsunami zones” and we’re not in it. Although we’re only 5 blocks from the beach there’s a 250 foot hill in between us and the ocean and I think we’re about 100 feet above sea level.
Not sure hills stop a tsunami? Plateau maybe?
It’s a bit of both. You go up about 250’ from the ocean and then down about 150’ to our house. It would have to be a truly massive tsunami I think to get us. I don’t mean it would have to crest the hill, but even to get around it.
But, there are areas nearby that are flatter and they have signs that say “tsunami zone”.
He’ll be OK. Tsunami waves are weird. It’s like a wave that never stops but it’s not gonna be 100 feet high. Hawaii warning for 1-3 meter waves and they much closer than California.
We had the tsunami a bit with the big one from Japan. Where we are it was barely noticeable, but it did do some damage in Santa Cruz.
I’d still go further inland, but that’s me. I got a phobia about being washed away by a wall of rushing ocean water
Seriously, good luck
Thanks. Actually I think the thing for us to do would be to go towards the ocean, which is more steeply uphill. It is uphill either way though…we’re pretty close to a local minimum.
People underestimate the destructive power of tsumani and then they die.
It looks innocent enough. Doesn’t have to be a massive wave. Its power is that it just goes way further inland than normal, and swallows everything in its wake.
