Home, got a hot shower, and have to share the end of my night. I was in an apartment complex and had a woman get upset that I buzzed when she was making dinner, so I felt a little bad. Then another woman answered the door and ripped me a new one for even being in the building. She’ll vote for whoever she’ll vote for and I have no business being in there, etc. Mind you she’s a registered Dem.
I apologize for bothering her, and let her know that I’ll put down for nobody to come back to her again. Her response is to start yelling again and tell me I shouldn’t be allowed in the building. I said have a good night and left.
I had 6-8 doors left and was considering marking them inaccessible because I was afraid this woman was going to cause problems - I wasn’t supposed to be parked in the lot and there was a no soliciting sign for the entire building, but I tend to ignore them for a whole building and follow them for an individual house/unit. Why should a landlord get to force their tenants not to be canvassed?
I sulked a bit but decided not to let her win, moved my car around the corner, and walked back to finish.
In the last several doors, I met someone who thought she was registered 25 miles away and didn’t know she had updated it after moving. I walked her through how to confirm her registration online and make sures she goes to the right place. Probably saved her 3 hours and possibly saved her vote.
Then I knocked on the last door, and a girl around 12 or 13 answered. I introduced her and asked for the person listed - her mom. She goes to get her mom, and her mom won’t come around the corner because she’s scared. Her daughter tells her I’m wearing a mask and I tell her I’m high risk too so I understand and I’m wearing an N95 and will stay back.
The girl basically yells at her mom that it’s important and she better come listen. This kid is adorable. Mom’s got a mail-in ballot, so I coach her through the process and how to make sure it doesn’t get tossed. Then the girl asks if I have any signs and if they’re free, and says she’s been wanting one. They’re like a half mile away in my car because nobody has wanted one all day, but obviously I’m not saying no to a kid who’s excited about getting her mom to vote for Biden/Harris, and who is living in an underserved community, and who is this into getting a sign.
So I walk back and give her a few signs and when I come back the girl has put on a VOTE mask, and her eyes light up when she sees the signs and she says “Yayyyyy! I’ve been wanting one so bad!”
Thank God for that girl, her enthusiasm saved my day after a brutal previous hour or so. But damn it I wish she could vote.
I also had a couple boys who were around 8 yell “Go Biden/Harris!” when they saw me. Children are the future.
