npc12345 argues that actually guns are fine

AOC must be promoting some horrendous ass shit for major killing sprees to be nonessential.

In the last forum he literally argued poverty didn’t exist. Yet, he thinks he is a smart person. He might be one of the 5 dumbest people to ever post on 2p2 and his brain has been infested by right wing conspiracy theories, but my god is he confident!

Weird that you talk about economics so much (probably lol economics degree huh?), your favorite presidents are Clinton and Reagan (Alan Greenspan) and you’re quoting Keynes as an authority (which is good, because he’s cool).

All good things and universal health care (should be M4A) and drug legalization are way more important than whether or not the federal minimum wage is slowly raised to $15/hr.

This is a bad point and isn’t any kind of a gotcha. People are very capable of caring about the 300 mass shootings a year without having to compare that to any other cause of death.

Both these are super wrong. Every Republican POTUS has been far worse and more harmful to the country than anything either Bernie or AOC have proposed could do.

NPC doesn’t have an economics degree or any other. Not that having a degree makes you smart, but I am nonetheless confident he does not.
Trump doesn’t know basically anything about economics, world politics or most issues at a junior high level but he’s never been called an idiot by NPC. I wonder why!

Is Neil seriously making an argument that because “only” 40 people die from Homicide via Handgun on average every 48 hours, we should all just take a chill pill?

I think the most charitable interpretation is that we need to treat all of those other problems he listed with even more outrage than we treat mass shootings. I suppose that’s tenable. Timing is still insensitive, though.

It should be pointed out he does not know what far left or extremest means. AOC is not far left or an extremest. Now my longtime communist friend who does not like the fake socialist (as he says of AOC and Bernie) is far left but he does not call for the extremism of violence some on the left and many more on the right want to achieve their goals, and neither does she. If she is a far left extremist you make the words meaningless.

yeah until we solve ischaemic heart disease what’s the point in focusing on mass murder?

That’s quite a bit different (and worse) than the charitable interpretation that I provided. That’s not to say that your interpretation is invalid. One could certainly read the comment as you propose.

Also, to be clear, I’m not a fan of the Tyson comment, so don’t take this as a defense of it.

I admitted I messed up in reading your post. But, waiting for an answer to the things AOC subscribes to that are more important than people dying to guns, or even the things she advocates that were bad points in your whole FDR bit. TIA.

yeah it wasn’t a dig at you. I’m just going after the Tyson comment.

Still havent answered my response about limiting guns to single use bolt action. Because youre a coward with no answer.

So what? She’s one of the 15-20 most powerful people in Congress right now.

Meh. Depends how you define power, I suppose. She’s fairly well spoken and obviously attractive, so she gets on TV a lot - I’d guess if she was a 5’5" pasty faced 200 pound white guy with the same politics you’d have no idea who she was. She’s sponsored a few bills, none of which have any chance of passing, from what I can tell. She’s on a couple of important committees, but I dunno how influential she is. She seems brighter than the average congresscritter, but that’s a fairly low bar.

So, yeah. OTOH, it’s her first term, and I sure wouldn’t wanted to have been judged as to how good a doc I was going to be 6 mos. into residency. But she gets a lot of love for a lot of reasons that don’t have anything to do with any actual sort of accomplishments. We’ll see if she wins next time around, and how her career goes.

I kind of agree - don’t wanna derail too much but this is an idiot thread so why not - except that AOC’s tremendous value and power right now is by being a voice of sanity people are willing to listen to and even inspired by. It is so completely lacking within the party. She is clearly a leader.

I dont think much of her elsewise - her stirring up shit with the CBC was a little ridiculous and her amazon blunder was a pretty dumbass move that people actually give her positive credit for. But yea, shes young and new and we’ll see. She could be a really powerful force for the party and I hope she continues doing what she’s doing.

K how many other bills have democrats passed from 2018 to now?

Winning her primary, having actual courage in her positions, and having double the twitter followers of the speaker of the house are accomplishments enough.

She will win her next election.

I’m looking at how “powerful” she is. For the most part, I define power in politics by the ability to get things done (or, I suppose, if you’re Mitch the ability to prevent things from getting done, but fuck him) I’m not handing out participation medals. She’s not SUPPOSED to be powerful at this point.

Looking at random ( I took the first, 7th, and 12th new dem reps alphabetically on Wikipedia) and they have sponsored 7, 8 and 10 bills. How successful they’re going to be who knows, but that seems at least interesting.

Winning her primary, having actual courage in her positions, and having double the twitter followers of the speaker of the house are accomplishments enough.

She won the primary because she ran a smart campaign in a district that was perfectly set up for her to capture in good part because the incumbent has spent the last two years pissing off his voters… Good for her. She gets to be courageous because she’s in a perfectly safe district. My GOP rep is in the same spot - short of getting caught with kiddie porn on his laptop, he’s not losing his spot. You have to win elections. I don’t give a lukewarm shit about twitter followers.

She will win her next election.

Hope she does. To be clear, I’m not anti-AOC at all - I’m just saying maybe pump the brakes a little. Give her some time. From a politicians point of view, she’s a baby. I fell madly in love with a clarinet playing blond in third grade. She ended up a 300 pound meth head. Lots of guys here have fallen in love.

AOC is very powerful. She’s moved the political atmosphere of the entire country. She’s opened the Overton Window. Different people will be elected for different offices down to the local dog catcher where she will have had an impact. Some people who represent different interests in the Democratic Party will lose because of her and some will move towards her positions to avoid losing. She is now in a position where when she says or tweets something, millions of people will listen and so will their representatives.

Maybe.

Or maybe she’ll be this generations George McGovern. He was the face of a “movement” that for a time seemed ready to toss Nixon out of the White House. Ended up as a trivia question. (BTW, I’m a McGovern fan - he was a genuinely great American and person)

Or maybe she’ll be president in 20 years. No way to tell yet. At all.

I reference my feelings about Twitter above. She has just north of 5 million followers. Dumb donald has 62 million plus (there’s a depressing statistic) - and they’re both preaching to their respective choirs. How much that translates into actual political power is…questionable, IMO

Micro - you’re a good poster, and I enjoy your thoughts. But like a lot of guys here you’re a little “enthused” on the topic. WAY too soon to tell how this turns out.

I’m not saying she’s POTUS level powerful. But she’s amazingly influential considering.

And McGovern did get his ass handed to him, but maybe he still had some influence on Nixon pulling half of the US troops out of Vietnam during 1971.
