Non-Political Ranting: Unleash Your Anger ITT

I think it’s as simple as there are more seats on the plane than there are spaces for carry-on bags.

The new bins that Delta has help a lot, since bags can be flipped on their side, but even then there still may not be enough slots.

Planes were designed for a different travel culture. They should be redesigned, if they haven’t already.

Space is already at a premium on passenger jets, and jumbo jets aren’t more efficient. So for passengers to have more room either we have to pay more or the airlines voluntarily decide to earn less.

I have taken three trips to Europe since 2022, so 6 flights in total (ldo) and every single one of those large planes had no problem accomodating all the carry on baggage. Each set of three seats had overhead storage room for three substantial carry on bags PLUS one small bag or coat. Plus if you had to you could put a small bag under the seat in front of you.

Double aisle planes will typically have center storage, which helps take a lot of the coats, smaller bags, backpacks, and soemtimes fits regular carryons. I suspect a higher % of travelers check bags on international flights, too, thus freeing up more overhead space.

An average 737 has what, 125-160 seats? There simply aren’t spaces for 150 carry on suitcases.

Here’s the real question - you bring one bag aboard, a backpack. Should you feel free to put it in the overhead bins, instead of under the seat as a smaller item?

  • Yes, of course.
  • No, under the seat it goes.

I voted yes, but usually put it under the seat because I’m too short to reliably be able to reach the overheads if I need something during flight.

How has 7 out of 12 people answered yes, of course so far?

Explain yourselves!

If you bring just one bag, you shouldn’t be penalized and have it blocking your feet the whole flight simply because it’s not a suitcase. IMO everyone is entitled to one overhead space.

What is the alternate argument - why shouldn’t I put my bag in an overhead compartment?

You must be this guy

Idk mine stuffs at least halfway under the seat and my feet fit fine in front of it. Backpack is where I keep my laptop, books, earbuds, etc., that I might want throughout the flight

I’m being facetious. Of course, you’re entitled to use the overhead. It’s just that most of my trips are 3-4 days and I like to travel light. I never check a bag unless it’s absolutely necessary, so I like to use my alotted 1 overhead space and 1 under the seat. The thought that I sometimes can’t do this is because of people abusing overhead restrictions or Puddy types is a little tilting

Yeah, this correct.

I never do it because I like to have immediate access to my stuff. Also if I want to stretch out more, I actually pull out from under the seat in front of me a bit and then my legs go over and past it, so the effect on leg room is not as severe.

I do this too, keep my bag up against the seat most of the flight so I have the legroom.

Backpack goes under the seat during takeoff and landing, under the legs for the rest of the flight. Easy access to whatever you need during the flight, no impediment on leg room, somewhat of a leg rest if you want. Win, win, win.

It is a bag. I carried it on the plane. The overhead is for carry on bags. I would have no problem putting the biscuit in the basket. I usually sit by the window though so I don’t. Why shouldn’t I put my one carry on bag in the overhead carry on bins?

There’s no law saying you can’t let one rip on a crowded elevator either. It’s just courteous not to.

Overheads are precious space and if you don’t really need to use it, then why take up another passenger’s rightful overhead spot and put them thru the inconvenience of adding at least 30 minutes minimum to their trip by making them have to go to baggage claims to collect their checked carry on? The ability to simply walk off the plane and be on our way is exactly why many of us travel light in the first place

So yeah, it’s your right to use it even if you don’t need to, I just think it’s inconsiderate is all

What I’ve noticed in the last few years as someone who traveled with the maximum amount of bags is that the seats I get are much better now and for not that much more expensive. If I fly to Mexico with an oversized bag of surf gear it’s free with first class tickets and comes with access to an airport lounge with free food and it’s $50 more than coach with bag fees.

Here’s the problem. Most don’t travel light. Fuck those guys.
