Only a good guy with a cannon can stop a bad guy with a cannon
My kid’s elementary school has done “Code Red” or “Red Alert” or whatever they’re called drills. I don’t know what exactly is involved, but I don’t think anything insane like blanks being fired happens. I would guess my kid would have told me about it. I suppose I should ask him, but I don’t want to freak him out if he doesn’t understand what’s going on (I think he does).
I’m honestly not sure if my older child - she’s in middle school - has had these drills.
I can’t imagine how scary it would be to have some cop come and shoot blanks in the hallways. I’ve been on movie sets with gun fire and it’s loud as fuck. Inside it’s so much worse. And we were given warnings it was about to happen (well, once we weren’t, but at least it was outside). Plus, we were grown-ups and it was make-believe.
EDIT: Proper sampling - my kids’ public schools have been very good. Mine were, too. I’m glad that’s settled.
No quid pro quo though.
Amber Guiger found guilty of murder this morning.
Shocked but very happy to hear this
Yea I was surprised too. The fact she could even claim self defense entering another apartment is just fucking absurd.
Did anything come out during the trial that could “explain” her actions other than shooting the guy in the “wrong” apartment? Did they know each other? Was he playing loud music?? (Of course, I am not saying that anything else is needed to convict her other than the fact that she entered the wrong apartment and shot and killed an unarmed man watching TV in his own apartment.)
He was her ex-lover IIRC.
I remember reading something like this, too, but couldn’t find anything when I briefly looked for it today.
They had had confrontations over his noise. There’s more discussion in the LC thread.
LOL at thinking you can get off saying ‘I was startled and shot someone I’m very well acquainted with’. She went into this dude’s house and intentionally shot him specifically it sounds like. This whole story has been reported incredibly badly if so.
“Seeing a “large silhouette” in the dark apartment, she said she thought she was being burglarized, and fired her weapon after giving “verbal commands.” She then turned on the lights in the apartment, and called 911.”
from:
So according to the killer Botham Jean was in his apartment sitting in the dark eating ice cream. I am sure we all do that all the time. You’d have to be a cynic to think she claimed it was dark to explain why she didn’t recognize this wasn’t her apartment.
That story is super far fetched with the details filled in. I’ve never lived in an apartment that didn’t have massive amounts of light pollution that make this story six kinds of idiotic. Like I’ve seen people put up black out curtains so that they can get a decent nights sleep.
She went to this guys house and gunned him down in cold blood, and obviously the jury didn’t buy her ridiculous story either. No wonder the DA didn’t offer her a deal for manslaughter.
Cops are just so used to being able to say “I got scared and had to shoot” that she thought it was going to be a slam dunk for her.
Pretty sure this was unfounded gossip. They had had noise issues prior, but nobody during the trial indicated they were lovers.
A bunch of her texts have been released post conviction to try to sway the sentencing, and she comes off as a pretty abashed “Im not a racist, but heres a bunch of racist bullshit” type person.
On top of this, even though she claimed to have started life saving treatment once she realized the mistake, there is no evidence that that is the case, including a lack of blood on her person, and not using the super gauze that cops have to help stop bleeding in the case of a gunshot wound.
Again, I’m for responsible gun ownership. I secure my weapons at all times in a top quality gun safe when not home or any time my little niece visits. I don’t brag about guns. Most people who know me would never suspect I own a gun. Tragedies happen. I remember reading a story about a guy who shot and killed his grandson. The kid forgot the front door key and was trying to climb thru a window without waking anyone up. I’d like to think that would never happen with me because the first rule when discharging a firearm is to identify your target. I’d never pull the trigger unless I knew who I was shooting at and felt my life was in imminent danger. We’ve all heard about tragic fatalities involving guns. I’ve also heard tragic stories about parents backing over their toddler in the driveway
I agree and think arming teachers is a ludicrous idea. I suspect that BS comes from the most ardent gun nuts and NRA . I hate the NRA btw
I think there are more responsible gun owners than you think who would be totally fine with sensible gun legislation. My problem starts and ends with the police. I fear more for the life of some random black dude during a police encounter than I do about the chance you or I will encounter some crazed gunman shooting up a store we’re at. Police are trained to protect themselves first at all cost. Shoot first, ask questions later. Better to be judged by 12 than carried out by 6, etc. Military personnel in war zones are less likely to shoot and kill an innocent unarmed target. I was pleased by the verdict yesterday in the case of Amber Guyger. We shouldn’t be shocked that a police officer was held accountable. Now let’s see what the sentencing will be. If a black dude entered a white person’s apartment and shot them, he’d be staring at the death penalty for sure. But cops, even off duty ones, are held to a much different set of standards
I fully get that people here think I’m the nutcase for thinking an armed populace can do anything about the gangs of militarized sovereign citizens roaming our city streets in uniform. But I fear them more than I do your regular Joe who owns a gun. Actually, I fear more for the lives of minorities at their hands than I do my own, but still… Demilitarize them. Re-train them the right way. Change their culture. Then I’m more than willing to talk about adopting something like what Australia has done and getting rid of guns. Just my opinion and I know it’s not a popular one on here
Everybody is a responsible, law-abiding gun owner… until they aren’t.
You sound like a responsible gun owner, and that’s great, but the two things you are comparing aren’t comparable in the least.
