Sadly, this type of stuff and arming teachers is where we’re headed, because enough of the country views it as the logical response and a sure-fire defense. We’ll probably have to endure 5-10 active shooter situations in schools that did drills and armed teachers before anything else changes, and the next change will be arming even more faculty.
This is especially the case if it goes on a state by state basis, which it probably will for the time being.
Then one day, in 5-20 years, we’ll finally have outlasted enough boomers to be able to do the right thing.
Meanwhile, apparently there is a credible threat of a plot to shoot up a movie theatre on October 4 when the new Joker movie premiers, and the FBI has alerted DOD, which is warning the military… Seems like maybe the FBI should alert the public, if they’re going to alert anyone?
I don’t know how credible Gizmodo is, but this seems legit. The author has a check mark on Twitter and nobody seems to be disputing it anywhere.
Having seen this in practice it’s fucking stupid, it’s very unlikely to actually benefit anyone if there is an active shooter, it’s terrorizing the kids and has a positive feedback that just makes everything worse, and for sure there’s a greater expectation of people getting accidentally hurt during these drills than there is of saving anyone. The police, the administrators and the parents who support this all suck.
I think firing a simulated gun is over the top, but I don’t get how this is substantially different from a fire drill or the earthquake drills we had in my school.
Police showing up in armored personnel carriers wearing body armor and pointing assault rifles at children and having them march around with their hands over their heads is different.
(and the gun wasn’t simulated - the bullet was - supposedly - and ask Jon-Erik Hexum, star of TV’s Voyagers!, if blanks are dangerous (you can’t - one killed him))
Sure, I agree this is over the top, like starting a controlled fire during a fire drill. But I’m not convinced it’s a terrible idea to rehearse what you do/where you go if students hear gunshots.
This is one of those West Wing kind of things. Sure, it’s possible that in some fantasy world of wonderfully responsible, thoughtful, and intelligent police departments and administrators and level headed parents, that Dr. Sidney Freedman will calmly explain to the children what might happen and what they can do. But, this is the real world and when you sign up for an Active Shooter Drill, this is what you’re getting.
Police and gun-freaks encourage these drills because they normalize shootings as an annoying part of life that you just have to deal with, like traffic or bad weather.
And they’re fucking militarizing the schools. It’s happening. Lots of them already have cops and fences and soon it will be walls and guards with assault rifles. The GEO Group (private prisons) can go into running schools.
