‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens - Gun Violence in America

What did they expect would eventually happen, seriously?

Trump was hoping for something like this. I can just see him gleefully rubbing his little hands together.

He’s apparently from Afghanistan.

Will they give hell to the administration that granted him asylum?

I guess I’ll play the scold but people are playing right into the rights hands by talking (or even joking) about this guys alsyum being under Trump. It just reinforces the idea that immigration policy can perfectly predict every persons future and when it does not immigration is the problem.

It’s gonna be this:

Ah yes, people work for the US military, come to the US to start new lives, we send them back. Let’s assume someone close to this guy either got their invite cancelled or got sent back and we all know what happened next.

Is that self selection in signing up in the first place? Certainly the “effectiveness” can be tied to actual training.

Tons of the “self-selection” for joining the US military is poverty.

Not really.

Interesting. Goes to show you should always double check your priors for better and newer data.

Veterans and service members aren’t more likely to radicalize to the point of violence compared to civilians but, when they do, “they are more likely to plan for, or commit, mass casualty crimes, thus having an outsized impact on public safety,” according to the START researchers.

The US military has a lot of administration that recruits from the middle class. They are probably the world’s single largest producer of PowerPoint decks.

Sure, when you count all the violent attacks like throwing subway sandwiches at people.

Yeah, the whole “the military is full of poor/desperate people with nowhere else to go” is a weird persistent myth.

I’m sure it was a lot more accurate in 1969.

That’s the impression China Beach left me with. A lot of certain kinds of assholes too. Less the Trump kind.

I’m guessing that this is your point…..there was a draft in 1969. It wasn’t self-selection by people joining up, it was rich people being able to avoid the draft.

That’s about the Vietnam War, right?

I agree. A guest on CNN yesterday actually had a very reasonable take, which included that sometimes you just can’t predict if someone will do something terrible. Sometimes people do bad shit even when they’ve never had problems in the past.
