I’m sure this dude gets off claiming that he was in fear of his life.
He’ll probably be held responsible given that it happened in Costa Rica, not a lawless shooting gallery like Florida or Texas.

i taught in a k-8 building in the hood, it doesn’t surprise me at all. i shared an office with the k-4 behavior specialist, and… yeah. it’s sad what 6-year olds pick up from the adults in their lives.
at a different school, an 8-grader was expelled but we still had to provide iep services daily. every day after school, i’d go pick him up, drive him a mile to mcd’s, buy him 2 cheeseburgers and teach him math.
a lot of times i had to either pound on the door forever or let myself in at 315pm or so bc he and his mom were still asleep. he had a ~2/3 year old sister who would be awake watching cartoons with a soaked diaper.
i may have told 2 people about this ever, one day there was a gun on the coffee table. baby girl was sitting on the couch 3 feet away. unloaded, still. another time there was a quarter pound of weed on the kitchen table.
yet another time mom was chasing dominique around the living room when i got there with a knife, apparently she said he stole her car and was gone all night. the three of us went out to the garage… and there’s a blunt roach somehow stuck to the driver’s door, must’ve tossed it out the window and the rain made it stick to the door. kinda funny actually.
anyway, i’ve been around dozens of 6-year old’s with 0 supervision and/or the adults are actively turning the kid into themselves.
no, i don’t say anything. yes that probably broke a law.

Seems like getting shot should be a Workers Compensation claim. This is America. We still have a second amendment.
