‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens - Gun Violence in America

I dont understand how the media decides which of these is news worthy and which isn’t. Is it some kind of metric like 10 or more dead?

The pain in Maine
Falls mainly on the sane

So this was wrong. His car was located at a boat launch in a neighboring town, but he wasn’t with it. I guess maybe he ditched it for another car that he had planted there beforehand.

There are several towns that are sheltering in place while they basically go door to door looking for him. Under cars, in winterized boats, under decks. Similar to how it went down in Watertown during the marathon bombing.

Seems possible and even likely that he swapped cars at the Lisbon boat launch and hit the road. If he goes west or north, he has an entire state full of wilderness to hide in. South and east are the population centers. Hopefully he fucks off north and this ends with a single shot when the heat closes in. It will be devastating if he goes south and repeats yesterday in another town like Yarmouth or Falmouth or even Portland.

Yikes. How long are they going to keep schools closed?

Likely reasons this one is getting covered:

  1. Large body count
  2. Shooter still at large
  3. Happened in Maine, what’s considered our most peaceful state.
  4. Shooter is a shooting instructor.

Not sure how many Mainers we have here if any but hope ya’ll are staying safe.

Obviously this is one of the clearest examples of “A good guy with a gun is just a bad guy with a gun prior to being a bad guy.” Absolute atrocity

idk but this is a huge body count even by American standards.

No idea, but it seems that most of the schools and non-essential businesses from the impacted area all the way south to Portland are closed. Everyone is sitting inside, waiting for a shoe to drop. My dad is literally sitting by the front door of my parent’s house with a shotgun, which is very dramatic but it gives you a sense of the mindset there right now.

I was born and raised there, although I live on the west coast now. My parents and brother live in a town 20 mins southeast of Lewiston. I left Maine yesterday after a few days visit with my sick mom. Wife and I will be back again in a month for the holiday.
This one is hitting different. I’ve followed the news of all the previous shootings closely but they’ve always gone down at a distance. I’ve had empathy and sadness, but never terror. I’m terrified now. Maine is a state, but it’s so small it’s also a single community.

The only thing that can stop a good guy turned bad guy with a gun is another good guy with a gun who hasn’t turned into a bad guy yet.

Gee it sure is great we provide good mental health care to folks in USA #1 (in shootings). I hate it here. I can’t wait to see how the derps blame this on Biden or trans people. Arrrrrrgh!

My wife’s aunt and uncle (and I think at least one cousin and his family) live in Maine. I assume they’re ok, as we haven’t heard anything from or about them (I suppose I should ask). They live in Freeport, which is pretty close to Lewiston.

Inevitably you can say this about any pairing of shooting X and proposed gun law Y. It’s a common right-wing rhetorical tactic to maintain the status quo.

You’re correct that a certified firearms instructor would typically have access. Nevertheless, he was institutionalized for mental health reasons during the summer of 2023. This circumstance should have automatically restricted the military member’s access to firearms. Military bases securely store firearms and maintain sign-in and sign-out records, as well as locks on guns and ammo. Additionally, there are reports of him making threats to “shoot up” the base, which should have led to the immediate suspension of his professional and personal firearm privileges.

If only the rest of America could have the firearm restrictions of the US Army.

Wow, SSRI’s is trending on twitter.

I wonder why…

Seriously this, the military does not fuck around with firearm safety on base. If you’ve got a weapon on you or in your quarters that you’re not authorized to have you’re in for some major shit.

You can own guns sure, but you gotta store your guns and ammo at the local militia armory. Sign them in, and sign them out. Start making threats? Well, you don’t have your guns confiscated, you just lose check out privileges for a while.

I’m starting to think the second amendment was an oopsie

Pretty sure that’s a court marshalling if you threaten someone.

The dark thoughts I have of questioning certain individuals about the phrase “well-regulated militia”…

Ok, but that’s socialism.
