It definitely was, but 5/6 of the other nominees were far better than both (Mank being the outlier).
Granted; it got award nominations for acting. Unfortunately the awards bodies are not shy about giving those away without respect to the movieās overall quality. Like, is Nicole Kidman probably really good in it? Sure, I instantly believe that; she doesnāt really miss. Ditto for Bardem and Simmons. But talented and respected actors doing a good job doesnāt get a movie there by itself.
The Academy should really make a point of trying to reserve acting nominations to performances that actually elevated the movie into being something good. Strong performances in service of ultimately nothing just isnāt worth honoring, with all due respect to the underlying craft of the performer.
Also got a Golden Globe nomination for Best Screenplay.
Was it best picture material? Eh idk but Iāll watch it with high expectations.
Ah, so it got to share the honor of also-ran nominee alongside the abominable Donāt Look Up.
I grant that Iām sitting here making the argument against some film Iāve never seen and maybe would even end up liking, and that it feels silly. But I guess Iām just showing my work for why Iām skeptical. Iām not opposed to watching it eventually.
Lol I went to add it to my Prime queue and I see I tried before and turned it off twenty minutes in LMAO
Poop Cruise would be worth seeing in a theater. Well worth $8. Itās a great time ![]()
Together is getting some rave reviews, so Im excited to likely put it onto my July 8th list.
It releases on a Monday though, which seems really weird, right?
I will start the bidding at paying me $500 to sit through that.
Iāll do it for $200 if I can be drunk and on my computer the whole time.
$500 if only one of those things is allowed.
$2000 if I have to watch every minute sober Clockwork Orange-style.
The Netflix Titanic sub disaster documentary has a pretty great horror sequence.
In other news, this is coming to Criterion Channel July 8th:
F1 (2025)
The story has been done before, and so have these specific character arcs. Regardless, racing movies are ultimately too fun to resist, especially on a premium screen. Dolby makes everything better, but hearing the engines growl and seeing the visuals pop like they do in that medium is enough to carry a movie pretty far. And, to be clear: the movie is extremely well-shot and has a strong sound design no matter what format you see it in, so itās not like Dolby is doing anything but enhancing craft that is already quite good in a vacuum.
Javier Bardem probably puts in my favorite performance of the bunch. Itās not the most layered character - really, none of them are - but I still felt more attached to the movie every time he was on screen. Brad Pitt is well-cast as the grizzled vet though as well. Kerry Condon? Sheās very solid, but I admit to my disappointment in how little she was given to do here. And that they go a certain predictable route with her character. After her truly brilliant turn in The Banshees of Inisherin, I canāt fault her for picking this project, but Iām not entirely sure how much it will do for her. In any case, it certainly didnāt dampen my interest in continuing to want to follow her career; I hope she has more prominent roles in the pipeline.
I donāt know how good this will be on the small screen, but I think it will at least hold up as decent. Itās certainly one to see on the big screen if possible though, and preferably in a PLF setting if you can.
3.5/5
Looking forward to watching it on the Apple Vision Pro. They did a short, hot lap, video in with the immersive camera that was a lot of fun to watch.
Didnāt like Damson Idris?
Yeah, he was solid. I donāt think Iāve actually ever seen him in anything previously.
He was the star of the FX show Snowfall, which is worth a watch if you can get past the first few episodes.
Lol I went to add it to my Prime queue and I see I tried before and turned it off twenty minutes in LMAO
Ugh. I made it 20 minutes again and am tapping out. This is an absolute misfire in casting with Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman as Desi and Lucy. The writing is there, of course, and let me tell you that the first two minutes of rapid fire dialogue building up to the reveal of the leads is electric.
But their performances drop like a turd in a toilet. Everyone is great except them. Unfortunately, they are the main characters, so if you donāt like them, you pretty much donāt like the movie.
I am now on team no sequel without Fincher please.
Do I care about imax? Our imax is old fashioned cramped seating and Iām spoiled by VIP theatres with reclining lazyboy seating. It has to really be imax worthy to skip the VIP theatre.
Find out where the closest Dolby Cinema is to you. Sounds like youāre the perfect audience for that theatre.
VIP has Dolby atmos.
