Just really a mean spirited movie where they pick on the rich poor girl with her Kharman Ghia, which literally every high school girl in that era would have wanted. But she lived on the wrong side of the tracks, you know?
This was me if it was Sopranos. I had not seen the show despite loving Goodfellas and Godfather. Finally gave it a shot and was like omg Iāve wasted so much time. I could be on my fifth rewatch.
I actually had my own Sopranos issue where I slept on it too long also because I watched the pilot once upon a time and found it so underwhelming that I didnāt move beyond it.
When I went back to it years later, the pilot still sucked, but I promised myself up front that I wasnāt going to quit over that again. And of course it turned out to be an all-timer of a show.
The Vortex (2025)
In 1980 Las Vegas, a Native Paiute cleaning lady enters a slots room at the MGM Grand Casino, setting off a chain of strange and unexplained events. Meanwhile, in-house comic Pete plays shrink to a host of colorful misfits while dodging mobsters and collectors. Struggling with a gambling addiction, he faces a life-altering decision that may determine his fate.
This has a great opening credits sequence, but nothing after that works. This is boring. I was expecting some Twilight Zone or David Lynch kinda experience, but this is suburban at best.
But I mean you know how I am. This movie has a 93% tomato and a 97% popcorn score. It has an 8.5/10 on IMDb.
In other words, I was destined to hate it.
I think thatās what actually happened to me too. But later I understood I needed to stick with it and the show would deliver.
Was it supposed to be about the fire?
That has to be a 1-of-1 among the agreed-upon canonical drama shows. I sure canāt name another one where I have a bad opinion of the pilot.
Comedy is another story. Those frequently take a while to hit stride.
Speaking of the āwrong side of the tracks,ā I edited my list to include a movie that slipped my mind, āCanāt Buy Me Love.ā
Watched that yesterday. Still really good
Oh man, I hate that with more of a passion than Pretty in Pink. It is one of the most mean spirited teen movies Iāve ever seen. What he does to his friends he had previous to becoming popular once he becomes popular is dark. I would not ever revisit that movie.
Yes.
I dunno, I remember the shower scene having a profound impact on me by the time I saw it as a young kid.
I understand the shit that childhood nostalgia can do, believe me. Thereās a whole generation younger than us who thinks that Hook is great and that The Santa Clause is a Christmas classic.
(I have no idea of your age, but thereās like nobody under 40 around here, right?)
Not sure, but I am right around that age.
Where is this secret generation with correct opinions about great movies?
Figured I might smoke out a Hook defender with that.
Bangarang mfker.
I really think it holds up beautifully FWIW. The director being a woman probably goes a long way toward keeping it clear of a lot of the bullshit that would go into portraying lots of female characters in early 80s movies.
I saw Hook in the theater after freshman year in college, and I gotta say I was mesmerized. Great movie, I donāt know, but I was mesmerized by the look at the time.
