Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

Is it a Juice Newton biopic?

I think it’s pretty good, but I wouldn’t really compare it to Arrival at all. If I’m comparing it to anything it’d be something like Cast Away.

Arrival was a purportedly high-concept movie that crawled up its own ass at the end and became quite stupid, though the craft that went into the movie otherwise was really impressive. I don’t think The Martian ever attempted to be anything resembling high-concept.

Oh sorry; I got mixed up. I thought you were responding to clovis’s superlatives about The Martian. I haven’t read the book that was being discussed.

Apparently my brain will search for any opening it can find to get its shots in about the end of Arrival.

Man, I never wanted to go on a cruise even before the covid horror stories. I don’t understand the appeal.

I don’t think it shares much with arrival at all? I’ve read it three times if that tells you how I feel about it.

It’s very highly rated on good reads.

LOL no. But it does fit your criteria that I quoted. Plus it’s one of the best movies of the 2020s.

Yesterday’s movie was How to Train Your Dragon in XD and Dbox.

Lol gimmick is gimmicky but we had a pretty good time with it, especially in the final act. Most likely wont do that for any other movie coming any time soon.

As for the movie… I liked it. I’m not 100% sure why, but its leagues better than any of the Disney live action remakes, even though its mostly a shot for shot remake of the original. After this and the Black Phone, Mason Thames is going to be a big star. He does very well. Nico Parker also did really well, though it feels like her part should have been bigger.

Gerard Butler and Nick Frost are perfect casting for their roles.

Anyway, fun movie. Solid 3.75.

Next week is Life of Chuck.

Oh, we also saw Materialists on Friday. It was… good? Song’s writing and direction were on point, but my main concern going into it turned out to be true.

I just can’t even with Johnson. I watched Past Lives on Sunday to try to get a feel for the differences and its just night and day when it comes to the sincerity displayed by the main characters. Greta Lee and Teo Yoo, and even John Magaro feel like real people in a real world experiencing real problems.

Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and even the regularly enjoyable Pedro Pascal felt like actors acting in a movie about people who arent real acting out scenarios with manufactured problems. I really don’t think it was the scripts fault, though I do think the SA plotline was unneccesary and the limb lengthening plotline, while humorous, just seemed kinda dumb (though Pascal’s squatting move and insisting that it is about the surgery when she breaks it off with him got the biggest laughs from me.)

I dunno, I think I would like this movie more in an alternate universe where the actors were different, but I cant be 100% sure.

2.75/5

I honestly think that the Evans character is a fair bit more authentic than the other two. Was harder to latch onto the others as believable people (though I didn’t put that on the actors), but Evans didn’t seem like a stretch to me.

Look forward to your thoughts. I did like this one, but it’s an odd movie and I have no idea what to expect basically anyone to think about it.

Fair amount of it will be tied in with your appetite for overly sentimental stuff.

Yeah thats what Ive heard. I can get down with senitmentality and im obv a sucker for King. Plus, Flannagan has about as much good will with me as any director can right now so Im hopeful that I really enjoy it (even though I might be one of the few people on earth who doesnt swoon over Hiddleston.)

Agreed, of the three I was most receptive to Evans. I wouldnt put my dislike of the movie on Johnson if there was anything ive seen her in that is even remotely good.

The only thing I can think when watching her is that she obviously got her roles through heavy nepotism, because she is not a great actress and her mother is widely reported as very respected in the industry

Her father isn’t?

Sure, but I would say Griffith likely has more clout. Maybe not though

Am I the last person to learn they’re making a Spinal Tap sequel?
