Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

It stole every storyline and character beat from Rounders and just did it all so much fucking worse.

Yeah.

I’m still gonna watch it once it’s on HBO or whatever.

Smashing Machine really isn’t bad, but yes this movie is far better. You’re getting bad info.

Marty supreme

someone explain the deaf ping pong player listening to a translator at the end? Also the entire marketing play for this film is orange and the orange balls play no role at all in the film

I’m not remembering this. I’ll have to pay attention next time I watch it.

I promise to give it a fair shot once I actually watch it. See I think if someone said ā€œit’s Uncut Gems with ping pong instead of prop bets,ā€ I’d say you sonofabitch, take my money.

I liked uncut gems.

I didn’t say exactly that, but…

It definitely shares Uncut Gems DNA. It just focuses on a different type of self-destructive person. I do think Uncut Gems is the better movie, but that’s a very high bar.

You totally should. I’m a huge outlier. It’s has like 95%/83% on rotten tomatoes.

Nicole Kidman never takes a break.

FYI Double Indemnity on Prime for 3 more days.

A Mistake (2024) is a New Zealand movie about a veteran surgeon (Elizabeth Banks) who in the middle of surgery let’s an inexperienced colleague take over, leading to a catastrophe that upends the surgeon’s life and career.

In the midst of this, she is fighting against the New Zealand hospital system’s plan to publish all surgeon’s outcomes for transparency. Her point is that no surgeon will want to risk their career on bad outcomes if bad stats cost them their jobs. Lots of people will die because no surgeon will touch them.

You can’t help but see the reason she’s so resistant is in part because she’s facing the catastrophe of what just happened in surgery.

The ending was a little predictable, but I was gripped the whole way through by Elizabeth Banks. She’s been in so many good movies playing a wide variety of roles. Effie brings it.

Oh and the protagonist is a lesbian so yes yes we are loving the representation :fire:

@RiskyFlush i think you had posted the review of Eden and i would say it deserved better than it’s imdb/rt although i agree the accents were insane. Decent SS performance.

3.25/5

Discontinued (2022)

A depressed millennial discovers that the world she knows is just a simulated version of reality that is being shut down.

A very unique way to tell an end of the world story. Smart humor, tight pacing, clever script that lets you play it straight or go but wait, I think what actually happened is x/y/z…

The cast includes Robert Picardo (Voyager’s EMH) and Langston Fishburne (Laurence Fishburne’s son).

3/5 (2.5/5?)

And I’m glad I finally have seen a movie that you recommend, doesn’t happen so often !

As a French mathematician this one was required viewing for me… Still managed to avoid watching ā€œa beautiful mindā€ all these years though
