You’ll love Train to Busan. It’s not trying to scare the viewer (beyond it being a zombie movie) - you’re basically on a wild ride with the protagonists.
House of the Devil (2009)
I am not the first in this thread to sing of Ti West’s praises. Sacrament, You’re Next, and X are all three great horror movies.
House of the Devil is just as good. The story kept surprising me. Lots of cool shots. The effects look suitably low budget and retro. I thought the last 90 seconds somewhat diminished the ending, but otherwise had no real complaints.
This one has B-movie legend Mary Woronov in it, which is always a plus.
What was his involvement with this?
And Tom Noonan! So good
I rewatched Sinners. It’s a great movie. It has significant cultural relevance.
But for sheer pacing, I give the award to From Dusk Til Dawn. You get so wrapped up in the movie as a crime thriller that the new direction is fun. Sinners doesn’t have that same narrative thrust. It’s just so slow until the last 30 minutes or so.
Counterpoint: it is never slow. It’s just not violent until late in the movie.
I don’t see very many movies in the theater 3 times. I did that and it was not advisable in my condition.
What is thrusting the narrative forward?
Opening night on that night no matter what
Interesting. I’d give the first hour an A+ and once the crazy shit starts a B+. ![]()
The build-up to, and commence of, opening night. That said, I was admittedly conflating “slow” with “boring” because slow does tend to carry a negative connotation in my mind unless maybe the person specifically says “slow burn.” I agree that it’s not super plot-driven and a fair amount of it leans on hangout vibes, but there are a lot of really compelling movies that aren’t too plotty. It feels like Dazed and Confused (which I love) isn’t really being driven along by much more than vibes, but “slow” would not come to mind for it.
With Sinners, I definitely don’t think the movie particularly levels up in the final act. I really like the final act, but not more than I like anything else in the movie.
Okay fair. Yes it’s slow. And that’s not really an issue for me. I like slow movies. I can even name some boring movies I enjoy.
I guess the biggest disconnect for me is that I don’t enjoy hanging out with Michael B Jordan. Especially not if you give him TWO characters for twice the screen time lol.
Alright, my arthouse is adding it starting in a week. I’ll abide that extra week’s wait since it means going to a theater I know I like and paying nothing (since I have a membership there) over paying out of pocket to go to a theater that looks crappy.
Looking forward to your thoughts when you see it in the meantime.
