Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

For some reason I have zero interest to see that. I guess because I feel like I’ve been assaulted by the marketing. I’ve seen the stupid trailer or some version like 20 times.

It’s not that.

I’m not expecting it to be some great work, but I’m hopeful it will be good. Regardless, this is the first Benny Safdie feature-length film since Uncut Gems; it would have been nice to see it get the PLF screenings it seems to have been slated for until this event unexpectedly swept in.

Ya. I guess it feels so much like a “give the rock an Oscar” movie which baffles me since he has only made terrible movies ever.

Dude has to be in the top three all time worst filmographies! He doesn’t have ONE good film. It’s a perfect record of trash.

Actually he had a cameo in Fighting with my Family which is a good movie.

People REALLY want to love him. I’ve passed that point in my life and mostly regard him as an obnoxious phony. But it would be cool if his performance was actually worthy of the hype.

Sounds like someone who hasn’t seen Pain and Gain

Nope. I do remember people liking it. The question is was it graded on the biggest curve ever giving the rest of his ed wood filmography?

I’ve managed to not see a single live-action Dwayne Johnson film. Not out of some intentional boycott or something, but just…why would I have seen any of them?

Planning to break that streak with this new movie though.

Why do you hate Moana?

Just curious, what is it about The Rock’s acting that makes him a phony? I mean he literally plays the exact same roles in every film and I don’t think there’s anyone pretending otherwise as to what his acting roles are…

I meant Dwayne Johnson the person. I really haven’t watched him act outside of a pro wrestling context.

Going from endorsing Biden in 2020 to saying he wasn’t going to endorse in 2024 because it would be “too divisive” naturally comes to mind, but more generally, his public quotes and his social media presence are just eye-rolls every time I come across that stuff.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson encourages folks heading out to watch “Moana 2” this week to sing their hearts out in the theaters if they feel like it.

“Sing! You’ve paid your hard earned money for a ticket, and you’ve gone into a musical and you’re into it. Sing,” Johnson told BBC during his attendance at the United Kingdom premiere of the film on Saturday. “Especially if you love music, that’s the fun part.”

I mean, for fucks sake. This was directly in the aftermath of the backlash against the awful crowds who were going to Wicked screenings and singing along. Saying this was the most annoying sort of pandering, and it was also nonsensical because he was somehow encouraging people to sing along with songs that had never been previously released.

Oh no disagreement there, I thought you were talking about his role as an actor

I swear Ballers was good for like two or three seasons.

I don’t think “phony” is the right word, I think when I see The Rock, I’m expecting a zany fun/dumb action movie and most of his stuff just falls short. I feel like The Scorpion King is his one movie that hits the mark for me.

I’m no expert on Dwayne Johnson movies, last one I saw was Red Notice and it was fine whatever, good airplane movie, and the Rock was exactly what I expected his character to be.

As for the phony part, the guy was a professional wrestler, it’s definitely not shocking that his social media presence also comes across as kinda phony.

But usually around here actors are graded by their acting chops, not what people think of their IRL behavior or social media presence. No one here is not seeing OBAA because they think Leo might be kind of a creep with women.

Actually Im considering doing just that

I mean I said I was going to see The Smashing Machine, I agree that there’s no real use purity-testing the cast of films. My whole point in mentioning that he’s a phony was saying that he’s still getting a crazy amount of public good will, the sort I’d only expect to see if someone was particularly likable. There wasn’t a suggestion of skipping his movies because he seems like a jackass. So far, I’ve skipped his movies because they all look like shit.

Well it’s good you’re considering that. I assume you’re also considering not watching most professional sports.

Right, but in all your posting it seems pretty rare for you to bring up an actor’s personal life or social media. No?

Sure, I imagine so. I’m not generally trying to make sense of why people are rooting for Person X so hard. It was just an on-topic reply to Clovis marveling at why there would be some sort of groundswell movement to push an Oscar campaign for him.
