Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

Have you seen Shogun Assasin?

One of the cool things about Weapons is that Creeger told Madigan to play Gladys one of two ways and not tell him which way she chose. He told her to either make it so that Gladys was once human but was somehow cursed to become a witch so she has some sort of humanity within her, or to play her as a kind of creature who can mimick humans essentially.

I don’t know if I saw it in that form, but I assume I’ve essentially seen it since it was made from combining the first two Lone Wolf movies.

The soundtrack is absolutely crucial tho

Post about the villains of the year

Update on movies I’ve seen. Watch a few because my wife gave me COVID a couple weeks ago. Could have watched more, but was also busy playing a lot of Terraforming Mars.

I guess I’ll go in the order I watched them.

K-Pop Demon Hunters

I don’t really see the big deal about it, but this was fine for a kids movie. It really doesn’t have any more layers than that. It’s one of the most predictable movies I’ve ever seen. The songs are okay. Golden is great, but I don’t see the need for 3 songs in the top 5. Although I guess if the alternative is Alex Warren, Sabrina Carpenter, Morgan Wallen and a bunch of songs from over a year ago maybe I should be thankful.

Dog Day Afternoon
Knew nothing about this going in; didn’t even know it was a bank robbery movie. Didn’t expect the overt comedy for much of the first hour. The almost abrupt switch to pretty heavy drama caught me a bit off guard, but the more I thought about it afterward, the more I feel like it worked. Definitely a movie ahead of its time. Was this controversial when it first came out?

I was told this was better than A Few Good Men. Is it? I’m not sure. I think this one had a better opening, while the ending for AFGM is superior. Call it a tie.

Mickey 17
Bong Joon Ho and a book that, while flawed, had a really cool concept! And we get…this? What is this? It sure as hell isn’t an adaptation of the book. There were some funny parts, but mostly this just frustrated me. Whenever someone asked ā€œwhat’s it like to dieā€, I wanted to throw the remote at the TV. In the book, he doesn’t know because he has to upload his memories periodically. It’s actually a major plot point. Instead, he just reprints a body and the memories of everything up until death are there? What? Why would you add a gaping plot hole?

I don’t know if BJH’s head got too big after Parasite or if people were afraid to tell him no, but wow this was a disappointment. Also, whatever the fuck Mark Ruffalo’s character was did not work at all.

Django Unchained

This was the only Tarantino film I hadn’t seen - just never got around to it. Gun fights were ridiculous but still fun. Certainly wouldn’t put this at the top of Tarantino’s work, but it’s definitely not the worst either. Probably right in the middle, which is to say, quite good.

Pushpa: The Rise - Part 1

Loved RRR, so I figured I’d give another Telugu film a shot. It’s pretty absurd and gets a tad off-putting with misogyny in the beginning, but it eventually finds its footing enough that I was into it by the end. Direction was great, story was lacking. Probably could have cut a half hour from the run time. I’m not going to rule out watching Part 2, but I’m not going to rush out and watch it either.

Scores:

K-Pop Demon Hunters 6/10
Dog Day Afternoon 9/10
Mickey 17 3/10
Django Unchained 8/10
Pushpa - The Rise 6/10

I have it as the better movie, but I also have both of them in my personal top 15. I think both are incredible.

When I saw it in the theater earlier this year, I remember thinking to myself, ā€œIt’s probably just me, but this head bank teller is kind of a good-looking older woman?ā€ And then I got out of the movie and got curious as to what I was calling ā€œolder.ā€ She was 36 when the movie came out. Welp.

I’ve had an ongoing argument with a friend where I contend that Ruffalo is a really good actor and my friend absolutely hates him. I think my friend’s position is nonsense. I got home from Mickey 17 and just bit the bullet to text him: ā€œI’m not conceding the Ruffalo argument in general, but I’m just going to admit that I took a huge L tonight. Mickey 17 is bad, and Ruffalo is far and away the worst part of it.ā€

The one thing I’ll say the most strongly in QT’s favor on this is that of all the cameos he puts himself in for, this is precisely the one time that I thought he didn’t embarrass himself. He comes off like a capable garden-variety character actor. Most of the time when he’s on-screen I’m rubbing my temples and wishing for his part to be over with.

In Sidney Lumet’s book Making Movies he talked about how the script originally had al pacino’s trans lover show up to the bank in a wedding dress and they were to have their scene shouting at each other in the street. I forget why they changed it to the phone call, it might have been as simple as they ran out of light that day.

He doesn’t personally bother me, but I totally get not liking Ruffalo. He’s the worst part of Task imo.

This was the mom from Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead. She’s in her thirties.

Here’s Sue Ellen’s boss Rose. She also is in her thirties.

How about Working Girl? The movie specifically says Melanie Griffith’s character is 30 (which was her actual age). Also cocaine.

Jk she looks great in that movie.

I’ll get right on that Rose! That movie kicks ass. I saw it in the theaters when I was 11 and have loved it since

I first saw it in the 90s but had the same reaction. I’ve seen it countless times. I even chuckled at the Keith Coogan cameo in The Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.

I am sad to report that the remake disappointed me.

Sean Connery at 34.

Re: Dog Day afternoon- as it happens I just saw the documentary The Dog which is about the guy who did the robbery. It is free on Tubi and pretty much recommended, especially if you like stories about NYC weirdos as I do.

I am not a huge fan of her music but I say great. This is awesome for theatre owners and she seems like a genuinely good person.

I believe she is set to top Madonna this week at the most played female artist of all time. She has a few fans.

Mostly agree, but it’s a bummer for Safdie to have The Smashing Machine suddenly lose its PLF screenings this way.

X being the most of all time just following a population growth chart kinda has the same vibes as a map just reflecting population density haha
