Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

I saw dogma in theaters on release. Enjoy.

Damn, apparently this one guy did every awesome movie poster for 40-some years.

I have absolutely no idea how to feel about this. On the positive we will likely get at least one more Saw with Tobin Bell before hes no longer with us, and Blumhouse can make some pretty great stuff on occasion.

On the negative, there will likely be an entirely new team on board and Blumhouse has made some very very bad movies in the genre.

I mean, hooray, Saw XI is likely back to being alive so Ill take it as a win.

Sinners is like From Dush Till Dawn but with actual social commentary. Is the social commentary “deep”? Not particularly. Is it “good”? Sure. Reasonable people will disagree. When someone makes a film like Sinners (or Get Out, the other obvious comparator) are they making something superficial or accessible? Or both? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I don’t know. I know I’ve seen a lot of movies that are a lot worse than Sinners.

Frank Darabont gave me a signed framed one of The Shawshank Redemption. Definitely one of my biggest or biggest industry prizes that was unexpected.

He’s the John Williams of movie posters.

Now we’re going to have AI rip-offs of his work for the next 50 years until the Butlerian Jihad starts.

The Life List (2025)

A surprisingly effective Netflix “make the most of your life” movie that is far better than it has a right to be. You are not going to be shocked by the plot but you will laugh a little, cry a little and have a good time.

Grade B

Final destination bloodlines (2025)

Tissue paper thin plot and not much going on. It’s basically an excuse for some preposterous, although mildly entertaining, death scenes. Bumped it up one grade because the ending was kind of amusing.

Grade C

I told ya you wouldn’t like it.

I’ll say that there are certain types of movies where I can just fully accept that the movie is a delivery device for certain types of set pieces, and without those set pieces the movie would be bad. Obviously liking this sort of movie requires the set pieces to be next-level immaculate and not simply decent.

Mission: Impossible is one of those. Obviously I’m on record as having found my limit with just how much I can forgive with this last one, but I’m very pro on most of those, all while acknowledging that everything since the first one is a collection of set pieces with a little bit of plot.

Astaire/Rogers movies basically all exist just to string together really flimsy romance plots, but the dance sequences pay off so beautifully that I’m happy I spent the time anyway.

Anyway, under the same concept I could maybe see liking the Final Destination movies.

I liked it ok. For me and this kind of movie I liked it more than I would have guessed.

I mean it’s objectively a bad film that has about 14 min of somewhat fun kill scenes. I can’t see anyone making a strong case otherwise.

sorry prestige tv, but burt lancaster just decided to swim in all his neighbors’ pools in a single afternoon. 4 bags of popcorn

It’s Celine Song week. Catching an advance screening of Materialists tomorrow, so I watched Past Lives (2023) again today.

I think this movie is currently holding the title for best final scene of the 2020s.

Wish John Magaro’s performance had gotten more awards love. Really think he’s a highlight.

4.5/5

It’s among my favorite films of the past 5 years and for sure my favorite ending.

Think I’m currently here for an immediate top 10 of the decade in progress.

I did not realize you like Nope that much!

I am with you on Tàr. I noticed new stuff every time I watch it.

No real hesitation in putting it above Get Out, personally.

What was so much better about it for you?

I liked it enough to watch it twice, but I am boring and my favorite is still Get Out.

I thought US was amazing but sort of deflated once we’re brought into what’s really going on.

I am really looking forward to Him.
