It’s really that good!
Well, it clearly didn’t have as much commercial appeal. But that’s because of the focus on children growing into adults and taking revenge against pedophiles. These are the kinds of stories that win awards but never become a financial success. Look to at the difference in the ending. This is a trauma that will haunt those guys forever. There is no euphoric release at seeing Red and Andy escape into their golden years.
I certainly don’t balk at bleak shit. There Will Be Blood is on the shortlist for true GOAT status.
Sleepers is fine. It also has someone give the oh-so-clever planned false testimony of “well, you see, I just have this stub in my pocket because I thought that one day, a lawyer might accuse me of lying about being at this ballgame.” As if that’s an actual reason that anyone in the entire history of the human race has ever held onto a ticket stub.

My man Johnnie To is clearly just showing off in Breaking News (2004), starting the movie off with a shootout scene that’s done as a single seven-minute tracking shot. The whole thing looks incredible. Big recommend if you like gritty 90’s-era cop action movies and/or Hog Kong action movies. On Criterion now.

Hey @ctr123 I just watched another movie where a person who loves it would tell someone else how jealous they are that they’re watching it for the first time, and in fact I just got done with it and thought of what a strong exhibit it is in the case for “spoilers aren’t real.” Would have probably had a better time if I just read a plot synopsis up front.
Fair to say that this is a much different experience than I’ve otherwise experienced from Robert Altman.
3.5/5, will probably go up on future viewings.
