Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

Dog Day Afternoon and Scarface seem like candidates.

Tropic Thunder another.

Jackie Brown is my prediction. Still not done, long a CR wish list item. And CR unfortunately lost his mom to long illness and he just started podcasting again after dealing with the family stuff.

Oh yeah, Scarface duh.

Scarface is roughly 10 billion times weaker than Dog Day, so if it’s one of those then I hope it’s not Scarface.

I’ve seen Jackie Brown once in the theater and I was pretty bored. I feel like I need to watch a bunch of blacksploitation movies to get it. I’m Gonna Git You Sucka is my primary window into that genre.

Same with Kill Bill, which I’ve never seen. I don’t know if I’ve watched enough Kung Fu movies to get it.

Also Sam Jackson’s braided soul-patch thing really bothers me. I keep picturing it getting caught in some machinery and how back that would hurt.

The Outsiders would be fun.

I say this as someone who finds original Blade Runner to be boring AF, and therefore understands what it is to react this way to an agreed-upon classic: I’m surprised this could be anyone’s reaction to Jackie Brown. Amazing movie.

I saw Blade Runner, Tron and Star Trek II in the theater with my dad in the magical summer of ā€˜82. We both agreed that Blade Runner was our least favorite (my dad largely because he can’t handle people dangling off buildings). But over the years, it became one of my favorite movies.

My memory of Jackie Brown is expecting lots of crazy violence and stuff like Pulp Fiction, but instead got a lot of DeNiro and Jackson sitting around getting high, and DeNiro arguing with Bridget Fonda, and the braided soul patch of course. I couldn’t tell you anything Pam Grier did. Maybe I would appreciate it more on a rewatch.

Coming to HBO Max on Labor Day.

Will make that a priority sometime in September.

You should rewatch it because what you describe is probably roughly 10 minutes of the movie. I would agree it is one of the weakest parts of the movie but Jackie Brown is great. Pam Grier is awesome in it and extremely prominent.

Agreed. Really enjoyed this. Streaming on Disney+ today for those who didn’t know.

Also checked out MI: Final Reckoning today. I must be too easily pleased because this one also hit for me.

Great couple of flicks today

But the jokes were good!

I was surprised it was that good because CA4 was Not Good.

Haha same.

Trying to decide between Caught Stealing and Relay this weekend.

Haven’t been too interested in seeing Relay myself, but I am guessing that you’d enjoy Caught Stealing. It’s better than the other new releases I’ve seen recently.

I thought I was only one who hasn’t watched kill bill for that reason.

But I did enjoy Jackie Brown when I saw it in theaters.

Havent seen Caught Stealing but enjoyed Relay.

My guess, if you want something more action packed and high octane - Cuaght Stealing, something more cerebral, deliberately paced and suspensful - Relay.
