I liked Blackhat pretty well too. It’s a minor entry, but I enjoyed; Chris Hemsworth is a good fit as a lead for Mann’s usual tone. Maybe slightly liked it more than Ali? But again, I liked Ali also, I just wasn’t super excited about it. To the extent that it’s the lowest on my Mann list, it’s definitely better than my least favorite entries by my other favorite directors.

I may be in the minority on this but I think Mann is one of the greatest writers ever in movies, but his directing really doesn’t do much for me. I still think Heat is my favorite directing effort of his.
Sigh. This shit is pissing me off.
What is the reason for this? It made $63,000 last weekend at the box office.
I really don’t know. I don’t think the theater release dates of last year’s nominees were appreciably different.
I wonder how much it made on VOD? Maybe the analytics shows that it’s more profitable to get the $5.99 rental fee from some folks who want to see everything before the Oscars and they’ll still get decent streaming numbers once it pops up on Hulu because it’s soon enough after the Oscars that people are still checking for it.

Yeah I’m gonna assume the bean counters know what they are doing here, and that’s optimal for them to get more rentals vs their streaming revenue possibilities
With Anora and other movies at the $6 rental price point I can see it. But The Brutalist just hit VOD with no other option but a digital purchase for $20, and the usual timeline on these things doesn’t make me think it will be at a reasonable rental price by March 2. Tend to think that will cause more people to explore their underground options.
I’ve seen everything I care to (aside from the final act of I’m Still Here, grumble grumble), but I do wish for the sake of discussion that a lot more people had ready access to these things before the awards actually happen.

megalopolis was like $25 rental with no option to purchase and now i don’t see any way to stream it at all. copolla spitefully punishing me for not just going to the theater

I could’ve gone to the Brutalist, but at no point did I feel like I wanted to spend 4 hours watching a movie that I wasn’t tremendously excited about. Also not spending $20 for it. Hopefully it gets cheaper before the main event (doubtful)
I promise you that going to the theater for that shit was a much greater punishment.

I want to believe i have the sensibilities to appreciate it. But the bluray is $60 on amazon so lol I’ll have to imagine

These movies not being available for wide viewing is not a great sign for their chances on Oscar night. What else can get in there (I still haven’t seen any of the contenders) to beat them? Is Conclave a dark horse? If you’re betting on these things, at least put a little down on Wicked as the ‘audience’ choice. Of the Best Picture nominees, only 3 meet the ‘nunnehi standard’ of box office to be a winner based on the Oscars wanting people to watch the show. Those are Wicked, Dune: Part Two, and A Complete Unknown. Every other movie has very paltry domestic grosses and most of the audience for the show will not have seen them. It may be time to get ready for one of the lowest rated Oscars broadcasts in TV history.
It’s like a Neil Breen movie, you can’t just buy Megalopolis you have to seek out a connection who has a copy. Makes it a much more special experience.

After doing work for it, I can appreciate it in a very basic sense but it is way over my head for why the people who consider it good do so.

Conclave is a dark horse, yeah. Probably the third-best chance to win. The voting ended yesterday, so Academy members have already made the final call. I’m not under the impression that streaming availability matters much when the voting body is all given advance copies, but I would definitely assume it hurts viewership of the awards.
I think this Oscar season the voters aren’t really free to choose what they want to win. There’s so much controversy going on that they may throw their hands up and say, ‘I’m making the safe choice, Wicked’.
If they’re going to be like this, then I’m just going to download it and not feel bad about it.
Anora was released to theaters the week before Conclave, which I saw on Peacock forever ago.
all i know is that i love Mann’s ASMR technique of showing the background noises of the scenes the characters move through in Heat/Collateral. I don’t know why that is not used more often. I don’t remember his other movies.
