The Substance
First off: How the fuck did this get nominated for Best Picture? Is this the biggest BP outlier in history? Movies like this just do not get nominated, even with the expanded list of 10.
I didnât find it as gross as I feared; its reputation probably dulled some of the shock value.
Iâm not usually into horror, but I was digging this for a bit. Unfortunately after that, it mostly lost me. It dragged for so long in the middle and got quite stupid at the end.
I see what it was going for and appreciate the ambition, but by the end I was just waiting for it to be over.

Four Weddings and a Funeral seems like a very odd one to me. Itâs fine, but itâs a replacement-level romcom that randomly got in back when the fields were just five.

The Hateful Eight (2015)
This is the only Tarantino that ever missed for me, so I figured I owed it to myself to give it a second shot. After all, it would be very cool for a director to throw a career-long perfect game.
An interminable two hours and forty-five minutes later - for the second time in my life - I have completed this. And it is fucking boring as shit. Thereâs cool camera work, it looks really nice overall, cool stylistic choices with the costuming and such, Samuel L. Jackson is as delightful as ever, and all of that only serves to keep it from being outright terrible. Instead, itâs merely below average. The worst Tarantino for sure.
I donât think the director with the perfect record exists. Tarantino comes close. Fincher comes close. (Ridley Scott does NOT come close.) I feel pretty confident I wonât put myself through this a third time, so I think my verdict on Tarantinoâs bid for perfection is fully in.

Same. Tho some came close until they kept making movies past their prime.
Not that heâs one of the all-time great directors, but Rob Reiner is one who put out a very strong series of work early on before his work fell off a damn cliff.

He had gone, at minimum, 7-for-9 in terms of work that is at least worth a watch, with a couple of absolute bangers (I havenât seen The Sure Thing, but it gets solid grades as well, stars John Cusack; he had another during this run called North that looks like it gets absolutely panned). The American President was 30 years ago. Dude is still directing; itâs just that he is exclusively putting out stuff that disappears into thin air immediately upon release. I remember Blank Check commented on how they felt like they couldnât really do a Reiner series because they generally do both the good and the bad of directorsâ filmographies, but they didnât feel like they could just cut off at âthis is when he stopped making good stuff.â

Yeah, I guess I need to see McDonaghâs stuff from before In Bruges. Right now Iâm only on three movies with him, though itâs a strong set of three.
Villeneuveâs stuff tends to excite me less than it does others, but I agree that I havenât seen any outright misses from him. I still need to see Enemy and Incendies though.

Barry Levinson was great for a good period, but I think the older he got he started taking whatever he could get. There are few if any people better at period pieces than him.

I do feel like thereâs a minimum number of plate appearances needed before the accomplishment means as much (I was more thinking of directors who are nearly or definitely done), but sheâs definitely off to a great start.
I hope this Narnia thing sheâs doing next continues her streak, but it seems like such an odd choice when she had basically set herself up to do anything she wants to. She killed it with Little Women, but âadapt a book that has already been adapted capablyâ is not high on the list of things I wish the best directors were doing.

Looking at his filmography, heâs got some turds in it. So heâs out of the conversation lol. His first real turd was Toys about a decade after he started making his mark.
