Charade (1963)

I feel it’s rare for a spy thriller (or secret agent thriller) from this era to hold up but this one does. Maybe i just happened to be in the right mood but it worked for me on every level

I’ll continue to perform the public service of scouring the services each month to see if The Insider is back on any of them since it’s constantly missing for some reason. One of these months I’ll have success and get back to demanding that everyone drop everything to watch it.

It’s on movies123 if that counts.

I second that. The Insider is a great movie. Russell Crowe is in top form. In the meantime, check out his recent movie Unhinged, which is currently on Netflix. Road rage has never been more entertaining.

Yup. That’s the movie. I can’t find the scene, which makes me wonder if it was cut completely or if it was just that I was cut.

It’s funny, because he’s amazing and probably should have won an Oscar for it and I still kind of think it isn’t the best performance in the movie. I don’t always agree with Adam Nayman, but I love this.

Ohhhhhh that’s a good call.

Let’s add Plummer to the list. Still kind of gobsmacked by how good his performance was in All the Money in the World when he was cast after the movie was already finished so as to replace Spacey.

It’s a shame that they don’t give you a copy of your scene regardless of whether it makes the final cut.

Release the dlk9s cut!

They should definitely think more about me, a lone background extra.

The dlk9s cut I really want is from Identity Thief. They added a scene for me at the last minute that was supposed to run during the credits (lol “for me” - for “my character”). It was just me and I even got to try saying, “What the fuck?” during one take. Never ended up in the movie.

We were robbed of your acting chops. You should start a YouTube channel where you reenact all of the cut scenes you’ve been in

Christopher Plummer is a great answer.

Some of my movie nerd friends have turned me on to the You Must Remember This podcast, some of you guys who like the old-timey stuff might like it. The series on Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi is great for Halloween imo.

The Howling (1981)

Directed by Joe Dante. Starring Dee Wallace and Dennis Dugan and has some Dante regulars like Dick Miller and Robert Picardo.

I broke down and paid 5.99 on Amazon to rent this as it’s streaming nowhere and I couldn’t even purchase it through usual means. The Howling is the second best werewolf movie from 1981 but still good and deserves it’s recognition in the genre. It’s gritty and moody and sexy and funny. There’s some pretty gnarly effects too. There’s a scene where Robert Picardo has had acid thrown in his face and the make-up is stunningly effective. Like he is legitimately menacing and terrifying.

Dante doesn’t get enough credit for his contributions to film in the 80s. The Howling, Gremlins, Innerspace, The Burbs, and Gremlins 2 in 1990. I think that’s a very solid run. Of course The Burbs is my favorite movie so I have rose colored glasses for Dante but still…

If anyone hasn’t seen this and is still in the mood for watching horror movies this season, I’d say this is worth the 6 bucks and it’s a very tight 91 minutes.

3.5/5

P.S. I watched the best werewolf movie from 1981, An American Werewolf In London, a couple weeks ago and it ages like wine. Kinda liked it when I was 18, liked it more in my 30s, and in my 40s I absolutely loved it.

I remember after seeing TAPS in the theater thinking, “This kid Cruise has a good career ahead of him.”

After Risky Business it seemed pretty obvious he was going to be a star.
