Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

This includes Samurai Champloo?

If itā€™s not working for you that early, I donā€™t think itā€™s going to work for you later on.

For me it hit all the right levels. I like the opening rehash of the events of the first movie. I like Neo being resurrected but now trapped in a new Matrix where his powers may not work like they used to, because his code made him ā€œThe Oneā€ in a previous version, not this one. I like Zion now being Io, a place where humans and machines now coexist in their fight against machines who refuse to let humanity live in peace. I like the new cast, especially blue-haired Bugs. I like the return of previous characters, whether that be Niobe played by the same actress or Morpheus played by someone new. I like the love story between Neo and Trinity being drawn out again. I like the music. I like the fight scenes. I like Neil Patrick Harris. I like the ending.

SC is very high on my list to watch soon!

Currently a couple eps in on Frieren and liking it quite a lot.

Watched 2 eps of Blue Box, Alya, and Dan Da Dan, but noped out quick.

I wish I was able to enjoy Argento as much as you guysā€¦Iā€™ll watch one every decade or so and always end up underwhelmed.
I tried again with Tenebrae following your recā€™s and while thereā€™s definitely some things I like (that shot outside the two girlsā€™ house, the whole dog chase, the arm chop / wall paint, the whole self-aware self-portrait aspect), for 80% of the runtime I just found it kinda dull (maybe the fact that it feels amateur-ish e.g. bc of the bad dubbing also played a role ?) even though I REALLY wanted to like it moreā€¦
(Iā€™ll just try again with another one in a few yearsā€¦maybe itā€™ll finally click)

Suspiria fell a bit flat for me. I had just read so much critical praise for itā€™s use of color, over the years, I was primed for disappointment.

The theme is definitely goated though. I canā€™t think of a better ost offering from a horror film, though I havenā€™t seen near as many films as you guys have.

This is at least an 85th percentile Rewatchables episode IMO.

I donā€™t know if itā€™s that the theme is amazing so much as Argento plays it full blast in scenes for no damn reason. I love a movie with an aggressive soundtrack like that.

Youā€™re better at understanding and articulating film than I am so itā€™s probably easier to appreciate it.

Nah I just have weird taste.

I watched Inferno and didnā€™t like it at all, though thatā€™s the one that Trolly also didnā€™t like. I admittedly canā€™t remember a cat part; I just didnā€™t think the movie worked.

I havenā€™t tried his catalog otherwise yet, though I do intend to watch Suspiria at some point.

Poll question: which actor or actress, if they are attached to a movie, is the most reliable indicator that youā€™re going to enjoy the movie? Not their performance, but the movie itself. (John Cazale is exempt from being the answer.)

Itā€™s awfully tough to resist Tom Cruise being the answer for me even though I never think of him when ā€œfavorite actorā€ comes to mind. His resume is incredibly consistent for being over 40 years long.

Emma Stoneā€™s career is obviously much shorter than Cruiseā€™s right now, but her batting average is very high, granting that I suspect Iā€™ve kept it falsely high by skipping the Amazing Spider-man trilogy so far.

All-time, I struggle to think of a time I havenā€™t enjoyed myself when watching a Jimmy Stewart movie, and obviously the highs are incredibly high.

Finally, a proper Bridge of Spies acknowledgment.

Seriously though, I agree heā€™s a better candidate than I immediately thought; him ceasing to be a leading man most of the time sort of caused me to unfairly categorize him alongside people like De Niro who have fully just gone primarily into embarrassing paycheck roles, while Hanks is still doing interesting stuff most of the time even in this later stage of his career.

Was going to say him as a very under the radar answer.

Heā€™s never really been THE guy, but his filmography is pretty damn impressive.

Simon Pegg.

I even enjoy stuff with him I dont generally enjoy like Star Trek, or some of his less inspired roles like Run Fatboy Run (that movie is fucking hard to track down. I dont think its on streaming or available to buy through Amazon.)
