Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

As I’m going through al pacino’s audiobiography i fired up Scarface on Netflix for the first time in many years, and i found out where trump was getting his rhetoric from

If you’re a podcast guy, Pacino is making the rounds this week to do press for that autobiography. He’s been on both Conan and Maron from the past week.

He’s just gonna tell stories from this book, so no

Yeah that much I don’t know. Maron said he tried to stay away from falling into that trap, and said “we did okay,” but I can’t judge since I didn’t read it. The Pacino/Conan interview is pretty funny just for the witty repartee. Also Conan mentioned that he obsessively gets together with his brothers every year to rewatch The Godfather movies, which is obviously the most endearing trait a person can have.

he narrated his own audiobook so i feel like i’m already getting maximum his life story from him. also, as an aside, his read was weird because some sentences he’ll say in a strange manner, like accentuating the wrong words so it takes me out of him telling the story in a conversational tone, which he does most of the time, and reminds me that he’s an 84 year old guy reading this book for 12 and a half hours i’m grateful that he’s doing that. he’s 84 years old he stopped pulling out after 60 and has a ton of young children with multiple women. he has like a one-year-old rn and he lost all his money so he’s trying to make some money for his kids before he dies lol it’s great, i’m loving the whole thing and i’m very grateful. the book was half over before he even got to scarface so i’m grateful for that too. he knows what the fans want.

Oldboy (2003)

What the fuck, man. If you’ve been slow to watch this like I was, it’s certainly a compelling watch on Netflix. But pack a cast-iron stomach to deal with some of the shit in it.

4/5

That was a great movie, i haven’t watched it since the mid 2000s should probably change that.

Society of the Snow

Jumped on this as soon as I saw it was on Netflix. Surprised when a couple of my housemates sat down immediately and said they’d been waiting to watch it. So this was a communal experience and we all got emotional. I was glad to hear as well that we’d all seen the previous movie Alive for comparison.

I didn’t realize until hitting play that it was a foreign film, but it has an excellent English dub.

The plane crash itself is brutal, far more brutal than that depicted in Alive. As the film continues, you can feel the terrible cold, the oppressive hunger, the sudden breaks that lead to their numbers further diminishing. All culminating in a powerful ending with an emotional coda voiceover.

I’m not sure I’d say whether it’s better than Alive. I put them both at 4/5.

No surprise that Anna Kendrick in the Criterion Closet is a delight.

Leave the World Behind is a good but not great low-key apocalypse film. It is very effective until that wtf final moment. It’s not a twist, just a strange way to end a movie. My housemate said “…what?!” because she thought she’d missed something between that moment and the credits.

I tried to keep in mind that this was produced by the Obamas. Barack gave notes that impacted how quiet and low key the movie became, with the director saying at first he wanted to go far more out there, but Obama helped him ground things in how they would more likely play out.

I give this a strong 3/5.

Oh man, I resemble this remark so much. My wife is into anime, so I’ve watched some of the classic movies (a lot of Miyazaki and a selection of others including Perfect Blue).

I’d say Spirited Away is still the only one I’ve found truly great. A lot of the other stuff has been good, but I don’t find it super enjoyable. It’s like a 7/10 is the absolute peak for anime films for me.

It’s mostly the same with anime series. I’m not sure if Arcane and Blue Eyed Samurai are counted as anime, but they’re clearly targeted towards western audiences and I find them to be much better than the other anime series I’ve seen. The one exception would be Violet Evergarden.

I think anime kind of requires it be either made for or by those in Japan. I don’t know why I do (and I think its for the same reason you’re saying here) but I count BES and Arcane as adult animation and not anime, and I have them stylistically separated in my mind.

I have no idea what the official definition of anime is, but it is funny to me that Western animation studios sometimes call their work “Western anime” in order to be taken more seriously.

Guys, I have become completely Argento-pilled. If you like John Carpenter movies, he has a very similar vibe. Tenebrae (1982) is 4-5/5 for me, a slasher/mystery with strong meta elements; it’s what Scream was trying to be but it’s much smarter. Susperia (1977) is visually amazing, so colorful. Inferno (1980) gets zero stars from me because they clearly abused some cats to make the movie and I hate that.

Argento also did the soundtrack for Martin (1978), an extremely weird George Romero vampire movie. I am told that his movies get much worse after the 80s. Still, I now have a bunch of 70’s-80’s Argentos to watch.

Yeah Tenebrae is awesome and that Goblin soundtrack absolutely slaps.

Every movie of his I’ve seen has a banger, in-your-face soundtrack.
